SATA M.2 to PCIE 2.0

Hi everyone,

I have an old computer running Windows 7 and Asus motherboard P5E with PCIEx1 2.0 and PCIEx16 2.0 slots. I would like to buy and install Windows 7 on Samsung SSD 850 EVO SATA M.2 250GB.


Is it possible to somehow connect the M.2 SSD into one of my old computer PCI slots and set it as a boot drive?


*I'm aware that the ssd isn't going to realize its full speed potential but i'm going to buy a new computer in a year or two and then utilize the ssd's capabilities.
*I understand that using SATA III ssd will be easier for me but the price difference between 850 EVO 2.5" SATA III 250GB is pretty low and I've heard M.2 has much better performance (maybe i'm wrong?)

There are kits to convert an m.2 drive to fit into a PCIE slot like this one from Silverstone. However if your PC is old enough not to have an M.2 slot making the drive bootlabe is very likely not an option. The motherboard would have to support boot from m.2 drive.

Almost certainly not.
It's not just the drive, or the adapter.
The motherboard and BIOS needs to be able to boot from that.
An older board will probably not have that capability.

A regular SSD connected to a regular SATA port? Sure.
From a PCIe slot and whatever adapter you cobble together? Probably not.

Just get a regular SATA III SSD and use that.
Additionally, a SATA m.2 drive is nothing special. It is the same performance as a regular 2.5" SATA SSD, just in a different connection package.

An NVMe m.2 drive IS faster, mostly. For the boot drive, nothing you'd really notice, though.
