If there is a SATA port, it's for an eSATA external drive. However, if it's just the SATA power connector like the last one, it's to provide power to the USB ports so they can be used to power external drives that receive power through the USB port, or to charge phones, etc. You'll note in the one I linked that a floppy drive power connector from the power supply can also be used to power it.
this is the one I was looking at and planning to get & wondered what the SATA cable was for...now I understand if an external needed power this would provide it if need be....thanks unclebun that cleared it up.
