Can a lightning strike only damage the set top box or will it also damage the LED TV ?

What precautions should I take to save the TV ?

I assume it can travel down any wiring to the set ? some tims them things have a fuse in line the will brake the connection as a safety feature but ??

may come through the power lines of the antenna/ cable coax as well ? we unplug unhook here if we feel its close to cause damage . its a pain at times but cheaper then buying a new appliance

nothing connected = no way for the strike to make it in to it

a ups between the tv and the wall socket helps but sometimes lightning destroys everything

the high voltage and amperage on a lightning allows it to travel wherever it wishes to in your wiring, phones are specially sensitive to die with that

tvs sometimes will be a easy fix, a fuse replacement or something like that and others, well, go to the dumpster or to recycling

unplug things for free and goof proof hows the serge protector working on the antenna wire ??? it don't 90% of the time that's where the damage comes in from

see the fuse where the A/C cord comes in at ? it will blow out and stop the strike there from getting any further in to the set

but un plugged cant even make it that far to worry about , right ? 100% safe

Any electronic device can be damaged by a lightning strike. You can use a surge suppressor or UPS backup for some protection. But none will provide protection against a direct strike. It is just too much power, too quickly.

Things you should look for.

Clamping Voltage: This is the maximum voltage allowed through. The lower the better. Good units usually start at 400V.

Joule Rating: The higher the better. This is how much sudden surge it can handle. This does wear out over time. The more surges the quicker it wears out.

Response time: The lower the better. Response time is how long a surge happens before the safety mechanisms kick in.

UL Seal: You want something actually tested by the Underwriter Laboratories.

For other considerations. Get more ports than you need. The amount of gadgets connected tends to grow over time.

You can buy higher end line conditioners. Typically start at $100. Which provide higher quality protection than cheaper surge suppressors.

If you are really paranoid or have very expensive equipment. You can look at an isolated online battery backup.
