Hi.

Either I am lucky or you are lucky. This time yesterday, I had soo many questions, but thanks to reading through the forums all day and aquiring a new headache, most of them were solved. Thanks for you help guys, even though I hadnt asked for it yet!

I Just got me an Asus K7V133(Original Bios) and an Athlon 800. I had been tearing my hair out over the past few days as with the supplied hsf in my purchase, I could not get the CPU below 60. It wen to about 64 under full load. I was pretty miffed as I wanted to clock this thing.

I got a new (cheap but bigger) hsf yesterday and it went down to 45! Now I know how much difference a hsf can make, I will be investing in a good one, rather than the cheapos. I cant believe I was ripped off with the pos one I got. I guess these places have to make their money somehow.

I first tried upping the fsb (with the old hsf) and it got to about 120 before it wouldnt start. Whenever I got to this stage, the only way to get it to post was to reset the mobo (short the contacts). I also tried lowering the multiplier in the bios just to see, and this didnt post either, even though the cpu was still locked.

After yesterdays headache of forum searching, I went home, via the mainstream electronics store & got a bigger sink. I got home, removed the old one, did the L1 bridges to unlock the CPU and put the new one on. I can only set the multiplier to whole numbers, so I guess I have to redo the L1's as I saw others with similar probs.

Eventually, I managed to get 933/133@45

Now for my few remaining questions (if you are still reading!!)

1. Memory

I currently have 128Mb of hyundai PC100 Memory. Before upping anything on the FSB I tried clocking my memory to 133. Everything seemed to work fine until I played Unreal Tournament. It went reeeeaaalll slow, like pausing twice a second or so. Very weird. I put the memory back and it was sweet! Obviously withthe above mentioned 933/133 it still does the same, so i'm temporarily back to 100fsb. I will be getting 256Mb PC133.
So.. Why would the machined have slowed down if the memory was not fast enough for 133? Surely it would have not booted?
Will unbranded PC133 be OK. Surely you only need the GOOD stuff if you plan on clocking the fsb higher than 133?

2. Processor speed / Temp /VCore

I think my limit is gonna be in the region of 933 - 950 with a fsb of 133. I tried booting at 1Ghz and it would have any of it. I tried upping the VCore to 1.8 and then 1.85 and still no post. The Max temp I have had with the new fan is 54 with the case on about 50 with it off (Thats under load).
Any ideas how I can get to the big 1.0? Mod the board for a higher VCore? get a better hsf(which I plan to do)?.

Thanks for your help, and thanks for putting up with such a long post.

New to AMD, New to proper OC'ing, Old to Intel, just giving this AMD thing a go.

Oh yeah, 2 more things.

Hsf paste. how much difference will a good paste make? My original pos hsf had a "gooey pink pad" the new one I got has silicone paste. HOW much difference will will proper paste work? I'll have a hell of a time finding it here in Germany as I dont speak German!!!

What was my other question.... Oh ah heck.. i'll remember later I guess...

DOH!!!

The *second* I clicked on send.

I cant tell if my die has a blue or green colour.. just looks silvery, metallic, silicony. Maybe its the light I was using, I dunno, but I cant tell... I hope its Copper, is there any other way to tell?.

I can shut up now :)

Take off the thermal pads with a clean razor and put some Arctic silver on. It will help a lot. overclockers.com has reasons why. Get some PC133 memory from crucial. It's cheap. Your temps are still too high. What's your case temp? You might need some better cooling there. 60 C is the maximum, try to keep it at or below 50 C. Good luck.

Hi, I ditched the thermal pads, along with the first hsf. The new hsf has silicone based thermal paste.

I dont know where to get Crucial memory in Munich(Germany) and I cant speak German so I cant ask around. The CAS Latency 2 memory for sale in my shop is nearly 3 times as much as the el cheapo... I just went out and bought 256Mb of el cheapo. Played with the settings, and think its gonna cause problems... grrrrrr

I have to play with it more yet. But it looks as if buying the cheapo memory may have been a BAD idea.. Oh well, at least it was only about $75 for 256Mb.

Case temp (well, mobo temp) is 35

Something I am yet to work on...

Currently, its on its side with the lid off, the PSU half hanging out and a small fan blowing cold air towards the cpu's fan.

Its weird, cos now I cant get it below 50. Gonna recheck the paste hasnt squidged away too much. I wish I was still living in england.. buying stuff is so much more easy 😉

Also, using a thermometer, the air coming out of the heatsink is barely above ambient... does this suggest to you that the cpu - heatsink flow is insufficient... Its an aluminium heatsink. the heatsink is cool (prolly bout 32) too.

*looks for some arctic silver whatever*

got to Crucial.com i was looking around i=and i geusse that they ship some out of the UK and it looked like it would be 65 pounds for a 256 mb CL2 dimm

I got some arctic silver 2 from highspeed PC for 8.50- I think shipp was $3 but it lowered my temps probably 10C from the generic white thermal grease you get at a comp shop so I was impressed. I have a FOP 38 and it is 29-42C (internet use- hardcore gaming BM's) at 1450Mhz. Since I modded my case to have a fan on the side blowing on the Globalwin and ram my benches ran a little faster and I was cooler also.

Good memory is the difference in a lot of cases whether you OC well or not at all. Get some GOOD RAM- you will run MUCH more stable. Corsair, Crucial, Kingston are all good- Stay away from no-name stuff. For the best you can be get Mushkin rev 3. They prob can ship over there for a cost. Once you get the mem try a higher FSB- You will notice that is much better than just raising your multipler. All my testing has proved it. I ran way higher benches at 1370Mhz with a higher FSB than at 1450Mhz because at that speed I couldn't get the FSB any more without crashes. Check out the help everyone gave me in this forum under the heading "I have a 1.2 at 133 but it won't post" Tons of info there.

Good luck!
