Scratched CPU lid backplate safe or not?

I got a new CPU cooler unit and had to use a CPU backplate laying around because the old one was not supported. This came with the motherboard I got two years ago and it was neglected over those 730 or so days.

A user on Reddit told me it is not safe to use this because it would scratch the traces and kill power to the motherboard, but that was hours after the post and I had already reassembled the whole computer.

He says if it booted then maybe it is safe, but since reading that I've been uncertain. I haven't turned it back on since then.

There would not be any traces on the back side of a motherboard where the backplate touches the board, only on the top side.

Acquire some electrical tape and lay flat strips of it along the surface of the backplate. That should protect the motherboard gelcoat from damage the scratches may cause.
