Screen black after logging in

Right after he logs in to his laptop, my friend's screen turns black. He can still see the mouse, but can't do anything else. When he starts it in safe mode, it works, but says his internal battery is low. Is this his problem? If he gets a replacement battery, will his laptop return to working condition?

No, a battery probem wouldn't cause a black screen. I advise doing some malware scans while in safe mode. MalwareBytes is pretty good, and whatever antivitus he has.

Alright man I was thinking a virus too, but I'm still not as computer literate as I'd like to be when it comes to troubleshooting.
