Screen blacks out when I close the lid.

Okay, I have a brain teaser for you!

I'm running a Windows 10 Pro 64-bit Dell Latitude E6430 laptop on an Intel i7-3740QM. Over the past couple days I haven't been able to close my lid without causing my screen to permanently black out. However, the screen is not off and my computer is still running; I know because it is still lit (just black) and I can see and move the cursor (and only the cursor). I see the arrow change to the clicking finger when I hover over clickable areas like links. I can also still shutdown the computer via command prompt.

I have my system settings to "Do Nothing" when I close the lid while both plugged in and unplugged; this is when the problem occurs upon closing the lid. When I turn off the monitor manually I can get it back immediately, so the issue is not from that function. I noticed that this problem occurs when I close the lid either all the way or almost all the way, which is odd because the computer isn't supposed to register ANY changes when I close the lid, it's set specifically not to.

Here's the kicker, when I set the computer to go to sleep upon closing the lid, it does so and then I'm able to open the lid and wake it as normal. The issue is only when I set the computer to "Do Nothing" upon closing the lid. Also, when the issue occurs and I manually set the computer to sleep during the blackout, it does not fix the issue. Instead, the computer goes to sleep, then upon waking the monitor doesn't work it all; no cursor and no backlight anymore, though according to my indicator lights the computer does seem to be waking up. I can only fix it by shutting down or restarting the PC. So putting it to sleep then waking it while it's experiencing the problem makes it worse.

To add to the mystery, I'm positive it's not Windows itself because this problem occurs even when I'm live booting into Linux Mint 16. This causes me to suspect a hardware issue, but I'm not completely sure since it's fixed when I set the computer to sleep upon closing the lid. Though Windows does seem to be affected more because now Windows sometimes boots directly into having a blackened display. When I boot into Linux this never happens, though Linux still experiences this when I close and open the lid.

I'm scratching my head on this one. Any ideas?

It's not windows.

Most laptops have a magnetic actuator installed which is designed for the exact purpose of turning off the display.

The magnet is most often integrated into the frame around the LCD panel however, some laptops use an older actuator which is connected to the hinge of the laptop lid.

If it's the magnet actuator which is fitted you should be able to remove it if you can take the frame off from around the screen.

I've got exactly the same issue with my E6430 i7-3740QM and found your post while searching for a solution!

I had no issue before upgrading Win10 to the Creators Update 10.0.15063 so can only conclude Microsoft's updated graphics APIs have introduced an incompatibility with this Dell model.
Am running the latest BIOS and nVidia drivers but still have this annoying issue.

One workaround is to change the driver for the ACPI Lid system device to something else, like the Microsoft Volume Manager.
This prevents the screen from turning off when closing the lid but continues to use the battery at the usual rate.
Also no good for me because when I dock the laptop Windows thinks the laptop screen is an additional monitor because it didn't turn off.

Changing the ACPI Lid driver might work for you, though, if you don't use a dock and don't mind the battery usage.

I'm seriously considering rolling back to 10.0.14393, meanwhile will continue looking for a fix and will post one if I find one...

Cheers,

Spoke too soon - hotfix works fine if undocked but not when docked (blue screen when adjusting display settings).

Thanks Microsoft...
