Screen Resolution

System: Pentium P4 2.8GH CPU, 200 GB HD, 512 RAM running XP Home Ed.

Since installation of Home Ed with Service Pack 2 there have been no
problems with this computer

I decided to change the monitor resolution to make reading a little easier
and did thid Control Panel/Display. Rebooted for changes to take effect and
the normal Windows screen appeared (showing the progress bar) and then when I
expected the 'Welcome' screen to appear all that I get is a small window
showing the words

NFREN
OUT OF RANGE

This window just moves up and down in the centre of the screen and no keys
like Cont/Alt/D have any effect

I tried booting from the CD but again to make progress it requires
Administrator Password which I don't recall setting so I don't seem to be
able to get anywhere

Any help in overcoming this problem would be greatly appreciated

Boot into Safe Mode and change your resolution to something your monitor
will support. It sounds like you upped the resolution instead of
lowering it, but since you didn't give details... Try a resolution of
1024x768. To get into Safe Mode, repeatedly tap F8 as the computer is
starting up. This will get you to the right menu.

Tap the F8 key just prior to Windows loading.. you may have to enable the
F-Lock if you keyboard is fitted with one.. proceed into safe mode, and then
adjust your video settings to a more reasonable level..

Your monitor is objecting to a vertical refresh rate that it cannot
display. The vertical refresh rate is the number of times your computer
is updateing your display in a one second period. The computer is doing
that too many times a second and your monitor can't keep up. The error
box is being generated within the monitor itself.

Pres the F8 function key while windows is booting and select safe mode.
Use the advanced display properties dialog to change the vertical
resolution for the dersired resolution to a lower value. as the advanced
display properties dialog is customized by the video accelerator, exact
procedures are dependent on which video acceleration hardware (or video
card) you are using.

That's your monitor telling you that it's not receiving a usable
signal from the computer.

Boot into VGA Mode or Safe Mode and then set the display
(resolution, refresh rate, and/or number of colors) to something that
your monitor can handle. Consult its manual to determine acceptable
settings. Reboot one more time, into normal mode.
