Screen stays black after going into standby, have to hard shut down.

This is an intermittent problem, happening around 50% of the time. I leave my PC for a while and come back to it with the screen on standby, wiggle my mouse to wake it up and sometimes the screen gets brighter, but remains black. The orange standby light also turns to blue, as it should. When this happens the only thing I can do is hard shut down my PC and turn it back on again.

I have turned off sleep mode, it is just the display that turns off. I have also tried turning just my monitor off and on again when this happens and had no luck, so I assume its a problem with my PC

My monitor is an Acer V273H, connected via DVI.

you said you turned off sleep mode but the monitor still goes to sleep? In power options did you set the monitor to not go to sleep? This is a separate setting than the tower sleep setting but in the same section.

If you did set this setting to not allow the monitor to sleep then it is a monitor issue.

I have it set to:

Turn off the display: 10 Minutes
Put the computer to sleep: Never

as a temp fix while you are searching to the answer change the monitor to never sleep. this will prevent it from happening until you try solutions for the problem.

You could try enabling a screen saver like having "Windows" float over the screen. You can also try using MSI Afterburner and enabling Force Consistent voltage on start up.

I have the same graphic card for my newly purchased dell laptop... I have thoroughly checked all the power options and set sleep option to never. I finally figured out that "Turn off display after 10 mins" was the culprit. I guess it is a problem with the graphics card over riding the settings of windows power options. My issue is when the display is off after 10 mins I can't get it back by moving mouse or by doing some action in keyboard. I can see my laptop still running. Its just the display that is turned off. Power button will also not help me. I will have to hold the power button for long time to switch it off the hard way and start the system again.

One work around to solve this is to change the power option setting from 10 mins to "Turn off display Never".

When I select shutdown also same thing happens. Display is off and my screen becomes black but laptop will still be running.

But I could not find any work around for the above one. It will be great if someone helps me out.

I have the same problem and recently found out that I can wake up the screen again by unplugging and replugging the DVI cable to the screen. At least that's better than forcing the PC to shut down. My adapter is an AMD Radeon R9, and the screen is a DELL 2407WFP.
