Question SD vs. microSD memory cards

MicroSD cards are usually considerably cheaper than full SD cards of the same capacity, speed and class ratings, including those from the same manufacturer.
Q1: Why the difference in prices? The price gap was there long before smartphones caused a large increase in demand for the smaller form factor.
Q2: Is there any downside to using a microSD card with an adapter in a digital camera? (Disregard nitpicking factors like the smaller card being easier to misplace).

I think it is just economies of scale. MicroSD is the form factor for phones and action cameras. Manufacturers sell many more of them. So they scale up production.
Compact flash cards are worse than SD cards.

I believe it's because the chips are smaller and cheaper to produce.

In terms of the downsides, a Micro SD card with an adapter will likely be slightly slower than an SD card if your buying one of the high performance ones, but not by enough to matter. The only real concern is that your introducing another point of failure with the adapter. I suspect you probably won't run into any issues though.
