I dropped my hard drive and now it just makes a beeping noise while plugged into my computer with a usb. The light still works normally and the hard drive is detected on device management under disk drives but that is it. I've also tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it which did not work. I've tried multiple USB ports and a different computer.

Solution

It's still detected by disk management because the HDD's controller (being solid state and not prone to damage from shocks) is still perfectly fine and working normally and thus communicates as usual with your PC. The physical side the drive, i.e. the spinning platters where all the data is stored, not so much.

I assume it's a 2 TB drive (not 2 GB) - cos that would make it like 20 years old. Anyway dropped HDDs are more often than not toast (depending on the height). You could try it in another enclosure, but I suspect it's dead.

Yeah it's 2TB and that's what I figured just wanted to make sure there is nothing else I can do. I just find it strange that it is somehow still detected by disk management. Also the height was at most a foot off the ground it fell.
