Seagate 2TB external hard drive

My Seagate 2TB external hard drive locks my notebook when connected. I can not see the files and/or make any transfer in or out. First I face a note as "there is a problem w this hard drive, must be scanned etc" I try to scan and repair, but this locks everything. I can not go to device driver etc to check the situation etc. I see a hazy display and that's all. When I remove usb cable notebook works. Anyone knows how to fix this? Asus Windows8 64bit system. Thanks and regards

I did not. Because I have movies inside of about 1.5TB. Further if I connect it to a media player which is connected to my TV, it works there.. Thanks for the reply

Also, I think I can not completely format it, because even if I connect it to my PC(not notebook) same behaviour happens. I can not reach to functions like formatting or seeing the contents etc, it locks the computer

Okay. Try it connect to different computer and see if you can access it. If yes , well problem might be in your PC then. If it will not work then there is problem with HDD and you should RMA it at the place where you bought it.

I have tried to check the situation with my notebook and PC. Both behaved same. I have a 2TB Western Digital (WD) too. I connect this Seagate(SG) and WD to my TV and watch movies thru a media player. If I download a movie, I transfer it to those HD to watch them on TV from my notebook or PC. Now SG is not accessible. But I note that it is working, For instance yellow light turns on (even a slow blinking can be noticed) when I power it, and also by putting my hand on it I can notice that it is working. Actually that was working this way before. There should be some solution by not losing all the data inside..Thanks for your kind answer

Well I can come up from two solutions. Im sorry nobody else replied to yours so im going to give it a try. First of all , were you recording on your HDD something?
If you record something on TV to your HDD it becomes locked and you cant access it via computer. Its anti piracy lock that uses any Smart TV today. Personal experience from SAMSUNG LED TV.

Second thing could be, that it is really broken, circuit board is not working properly or the HDD itself is gone. You can try to take it apart and try HDD to mount it into computer. Talking about big case pc. But I wouldn't recommend that since by taking apart the the external case would void your warranty.

If nobody responds this , im afraid that the only way to make your HDD work again is taking it to seller and let him replace for the new one. Ultimately you can try to connect it to tv and if you can format it through tv -> do it. You would lose all your movies but you would spare yourself a trouble with seller. If that doesnt work/help either... Seller is the way of life...:wahoo:

EDIT: If your warranty is over take it apart and mount the HDD to the computer and see if it is working. 😉

EDIT 2: If it works properly in media player it seems that the media player itself locked it for antipiracy issues.

As I said above I have Seagate(SG) 2TB external but also Western Digital (WD) 2TB external too. I was connecting them to a media player to watch the content movies on TV. While I d/l movies to my laptop, I needed to transfer them to those externals. And lately as I reported the problem, SG was freezing when I connect it w a USB to my laptop. I was unable to do anything w laptop. Just a few mins ago. I changed the USB cable of WD w SG's and all worked fine. So as one can understand there may be many solutions to a problem which we shld try all unfortunately. Although trial error is not the way I like to solve problems, I am happy it worked. So will go out and buy a new USB cable for SG now :)
