In my country, they're both priced the same (full price, not on sale), and because of that I'm really confused. The 05 has 256 MB of cache, while the 06 has only 64 MB cache, but the 06 far outsells the 05 (which doesn't even have any reviews) and taking part number into consideration, the 06 is newer. Judging by bare specs, the 05 is superior. Are there any hidden details that I might be missing ? Which one is better and why ?

newer usually does it better, nobody makes new product worse by design, it must somehow work better/ faster/ less power/ cheaper in production.
my guess is that they used faster cache and plates were not able to overload 128 MB not thinking about 256 MB. It might also be a issue with guaranteed flush of the cache.
Take the one that is used and have solid reviews. 005 might be a faulty product by all we know.

I understand, that's what I was thinking, but then again, newer doesn't always mean better, and it can also mean they cut down on productions costs with lower cache (since on many sites the 005 is much more expensive than the 006 so I might have found an exception in my country) which is why I was hoping for an answer with more insight into the nitty-gritty of the products themselves

I always look at it like this
You can buy an American car with 6 litre engine
You can buy a Japanese car with 3 litre engine
Generally the Japanese car engine is way more efficient, faster, and more reliable - it's not all about the size. (256mb cache vs 64mb)

You have a choice, and you have 2 peoples opinions so far.

Thank you for your answer, however, I'm a bit confused. The ST2000DM005 in that list appears to have 5400 RPM, while the one I found in shops with the exact same part number says 7200 RPM. Any idea why ?

Not sure why. What store is it and do you have a link so we can look into it? Double checked and yes, the drive is 5400 RPM.

Multiple stores have it like this:
In my country specifically
and on a google search. It was also the case on Newegg, but they recently removed the product from their page.
