I have put a new hard drive in my computer and a new copy of windows and I need to get my documents off the backup drive. Whenever I plug it in to the computer there is the noise that means that you have plugged something in but it does not show up in my computer. I tried to plug it into the front USB ports ,it installs the drivers and it still does not show up. If anyone has something I can try to do please respond.

Hey there, Ihaztechnewbie!

I'd recommend you to try using a different USB cable with the external drive. It's possible that the one you are currently using is malfunctioning. I'd also suggest you to go to Disk Management and check how the external HDD is recognized there. If you are given the option when you right click on the appropriate volume of the portable drive, you can also try assigning a different drive letter to it. That might actually help you get the drive to pop up in My Computer and access it.
If you have access to another PC/laptop, I'd try plugging it there as well and see if it will get detected.

Keep me posted. Hope this helps! :)
