[citation][nom]sublifer[/nom]Don't be a tool. Yes some of those companies may be guilty of patent trolling but don't assume every lawsuit involving patents is trolling. As mentioned in the article, Convolve approached Seagate, under NDA, with their technology, likely wanting their patent/technology bought, leased, or work as a partner, only to find Seagate later just took that technology and used it anyway.[/citation]
While Convolve may have a patent on one method of making hard disks quieter, they don't have a broad patent on the idea of making hard disks that produce less noise. This is like saying Phoenix illegally stole IBM's technology when they created their own BIOS for clone PC's even though Phoenix's BIOS was completely different from IBM's.

[citation][nom]jcknouse[/nom]I believe that if you check into it, you will actually find that the biggest patent, trademark, and copyright filer in the United States, as well as the company with the most infringement claims in United States court currently and for the past several years....is Microsoft.Microsoft is the biggest, baddest patent troll of them all.As for them creating "totally different technologies that did the same thing which is completely legal", that is near impossible to prove and substantiate when your representatives have met with, discussed, and overviewed the technology of another company's work and intellectual property.Besides that, the courts now twice seem to agree that Microsoft "willfully infringed" on a patent. That means they knew of the existence of that patent, and used the technology without permission anyway. The 800 lb gorilla is about to get thumped.[/citation]

I agree.. He maybe forgot to read the fine print on the box. Seagate 5 Years vs WD 1 year warranty, some WD retail do offer 3yrs max. Price per GB + Warranty = Seagate is better.

[citation][nom]yang[/nom]are you serious? I for one never bought an overpriced WD hard drive when the alternatively cheaper and equally performing hard drive available from seagate. I'm sure many would agree with me[/citation]
[citation][nom]OvrClkr[/nom]Seagate didn't have a chance anyways, WD is on top of the competition when it comes to platter drives..all I can say is "LMFAO" to Seagate =)[/citation]
Ok seriously, stop being fanboys. There were some really good WD drives and some really bad (pricce vs performance & reliability) drives through out the ages. Same goes for Seagate drives. So STFU fanboys.

There were two brands of hd's that I always bought. Seagate or Maxtor. From now on Maxtor. Even if you would buy a SSD in the future that doesn't use this technology I will always remember.

The only problem with that statement is that Seagate didn't take Convolve's technology. They never used it in any of their drives. They looked over Convolve's stuff and decided it wasn't worth the royalties, and since it was never used in their drives, the whole lawsuit is bunk.

Let's face it. HDDs are HDDs. If you want info, look at the charts here.

Let's not talk about WD vs Seagate vs Other People. That's NOT what this article is about! This is about the suit!

I think that we'll see a settlement in this case. Seagate is definitely not going down as a company, come on. They're a huge company (like WD...)

Take a look for yourself, they're almost the same as far as company size, employees, shares, etc

Well thats funny since my experience has been that WD tends to break faster than Seagate. A friend got two in a row from them of the same model that was pretty much DOA.

I have 2 Seagate Baracuddas in my old machine that are 7 years old still running great.

Personally though the writer seems to be more of a instant hater. The employee wcould be lying and if anything it will be settled. And $800 million is a lot to ask for HDDs....

not a fanboy of WD, I am a fanboy of everything that has to do with PC's but if your product gets more negative reviews than any other brand you tend to stay away... if they worked for you then GREAT =)... I have purchased over 8 640's that have been put into 4 diff rigs (all raid0)

In the end when you spend 150.00$ for over 1TB of space and blazing speeds you kinda get attached to that brand.

Cheaper than WD? You must be insane. Plus, they make some of the best! :)

Simply downloading a program to check the probability of drive failure (Like HDD-Health) will quickly show you why Seagate has to steal technology just to stay alive!
ALL of my Seagate drives that have not already failed show problems that will lead to failure!

The only Western Digital Drive that ever failed on me was the one I accidently dropped a heavy object onto while it was copying some files!

NONE of my other Western Digitals indicate probable drive failure like Seagates, but instead are all at 100% Health.

I completely stopped buying Seagates last year after incredible failure rates became the norm.

Seagate Fanboys should CHECK their drives before promoting that crap!

9 times out of 10 hard drives arriving DOA like jimmysmitty's friend are due to the buyer trying to save $3 or $4 on shipping.

Check Newegg shipping complaints for more info or watch the mailman drop your new drives when they arrive!

This is not a problem with Western Digital Drives, but with cheapskate Noobs who would rather blame Western Digital for their own incompetence.

Failure rates for WD drives are nowhere near Seagates Failure rates unless your just trying to save a couple of bucks on shipping

I like how people are calling this company a patent troll. I bet if this was Intel or Nvidia being sued in the same manner, we'd have five pages of hyperbole over how they need to be punished.

I will never purchase a drive from Newegg again. Twice, I've purchased drives with other components and they were horribly packaged. For example: drives in OEM bags on the very bottom corner of a big box and not protected by any foam or other packing material. Spend the extra $15 and support a local business, get the retail packaging if it isn't too much more expensive.
