Seagate Backup Plus takes forever to boot up.

I have a 3TB Seagate Backup Plus external hard drive. It worked great for a while, but now, when i plug it in, it makes weird noises for hours, sometimes days, before becoming accessible and turning on its LED. Does anyone know what the heck is going on?

I would first insure that any important data is backed up, then I would run SeaTools on the drive to check its integrity and if it passes everything consider running a chkdsk on it.

I would also advise you to back up the data that is on the drive until you resolve the issue.
After that you can try connecting the drive with different cables. Sometimes, bad cables could be a reason for external hard drives making weird noises. If the issue persists, you can test the drive with a brand specific testing tool as RealBeast already suggested.
