Hi all,

I'm looking at getting a couple 2TB hard drives (one for storage and one for backup) and I'm looking at the Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148834

Anyone have any experience with these drives? Speed is not so much of a concern for me, I am utmost concerned about reliability as I want something that is going to last and not die on me right away (been there done that....NOT fun!)

For the combined price of both drives I'm trying to stay as close to $200 as possible (but a little over is ok).

Thanks,
-tkr

WD Green is known to be terrible due to their "intellipark" function. Seagate Barracuda and WD Blue are comparable.

Greens are fine as storage drive but for reasons stated, they do not make good gaming drives. I have two in my server that have been running for several years now.

Toshibas are actually Hitachi consumer drives. I also have 2 Tohibas but in my desktop. They are about 9 months old and have run in raid0 with no issues to report.

Seagate is the last company I consider for "reliability". Worst drives ever! I buried two drives and had headache with third one. I lost most of my info!
All drives was used for "file dump" and hardly updated.
Two 500GB drives I planned to use in RAID - nope, f* off! You cannot do it so cheap! (and no warning "cannot be used in RAID" issued by Seagate) Buy twice more expensive drives and do what you want. Huh...
Anyway, even in simple mode one drive become dead - in one month of use!! WTF they do at "quality assurance" stage???
Well, second drive lived longer - it was dead in post-guarantee era, but sacrificed my data too. I hoped it will serve at least 10 years - not so much for my mode of use!
Third drive is 2TB ST2000DM001 - this cr@p didn't live even 2 years (_reduced_ guarantee period) - it also burnt my collection in blink of an eye. WTF?? How I can rely on a company which puts its dick on a quality? Cheaper, cheaper, cheaper... soon drives will be made from autumn leaves!

NEVER EVER will buy their drives!

Sorry, total BS!
I wasted a whole week bouncing with their dumbiest support emails about my fault drive. Me, who knows everything in PC, cannot put in their head that diagnosis is final! It's like idiots in most of the ISP supports: I have no DSL connection (modem indicates), but they tell me: "Start IE and tell us what it says"!! Complete morons...

So after my wasted week I understood: no way, Seagate morons barricaded from users by "support site", where there is NO EVEN ONE OFFICIAL! Do you believe?? You cannot get "official" answer ever! I was replied only by some strangers who doesn't work in Seagate!! What's the end of story? NINE MONTHS LATER Seagate confirmed my bug and just said "in new drives it's fixed!" Whoa!! Guys, I'm so happy for your OPERATIVE work that cannot wait until I put my broken HDD into the ass of every goddamn engineer who makes these drives!

So don't say me about "Seagate support" - it's a fiction. Drawn cauldron on the paper.

I have had 4 of those drives in raid 0 for about a year, used for video editing with no problems, read write speeds up to 600MB/s when using large video files. My second fastest drive in my setup is my OS samsung SSD 840 EVO with about 500MB/s. If an item on Newegg has three or more stars just buy it, just make sure it's not refurb and comes with full warranty. Always backup important files.

please don't buy seagate i bought a 2tb exact same hard drive year back and after my year of warranty ends it broke, i noticed few system errors and little bit lag in my rig after that i looked up in the Hard Drive Essentials and it showed me there are some surface sector errors on my hard drive and cant send it to claim the warranty yet and i lost all of my data, worst brand ever

Sorry for your loss dude, having same problem like yours but with other brands, 2 WD Hardisk(internal and external), 1 Toshiba Hardisk, and now been using seagate 2TB(ST2000DM001) more than 2 years already and still works fine(all 3 partitions). and yes I'm always clean my desktop at least once in 4 months, using air compressor carefully and my seagate hardisk also got it's own cooling fan on top of it, also, been using this hardisk for works, gaming, data storage, and my pc always on for a very long time, or no,(3 to 4 days on) running. maybe its my luck getting the good one? or maybe because its always stay clean? not 100% sure, just sharing my experience..

In the spirit of sharing:

My 3tb Seagate's are now just over a year old and still work fine.
My 2tb Toshiba branded Hitachi's are now 2 yrs old and still work fine.
Of my 2 Samsung 1tb F3's, one developed bad sectors and Seagate promptly replaced it without so much as asking for a failure code.
My 4 Samsung 830's - no issues after 3 yrs.
My 2 WD 2tb Green drives. - Working fine after 3 yrs+
My 2 Samsung F4's - working fine still after more than 4 years.
My 2tb Seagate external drive still working fine after 3 years.

Of the systems I've built for others the only failure this year was also another Samsung F3 which Seagate replaced under warranty. yes this is odd to me too, usually I have 3 or 4 a year. 🙂 I hope I didn't just jinx myself. LoL

It's funny, I seem to remember back at 2006 seagate acquired maxtor that was well known for making bad drives. Then all hell broke loose - most 1.5 TB drives from Seagate were defective and that was a major issue. 2 Samsung 750 GB are still with me since the end of 2000s and never died. Samsung was always reliable but even them became part of Seagate.

Why Seagate is never unmasked is beyond me. They always produced defective hard drives, at least since decided to acquire maxtor in 2006, and people are still asking whether should buy anything from them?

Seagate hard drives are defective from day one, my friend. Don't know about western digital but they are not much better. Please note their GREEN drives are known for being slow due to the technology used, I was going to buy the 2 TB model when discovered this, too. That explains why they are cheap.

I admit newegg does not handle these drives well when shipping and many buyers mean more complaints. But if you think Seagate is reliable then you are either misinformed or borderline insane. Seagate = scam! plain and simple. These people should be put in jail.

Besides HDDs with more capacity are more complex and thus more prone to become defective. It is not even planned obsolescence, just sheer incompetence.

There are many happy Seagate users who would disagree with you I'm afraid but you are welcome to have your own opinion.

I personally believe that everyone makes their cheap inferior part but they also make their high quality part. Not many recommend Hitachi yet walk into a data center and you'll likely find that 75% of the drives there are Hitachi's spinning away at 10-15k rpm's.

I also strongly beleive that the packaging in the final shipping to the end user makes the largest difference...

Here is another proof Seagate can't be trusted in case there is any doubt:

https://www.backblaze.com/blog/what-hard-drive-should-i-buy/

Guess which companies are more reliable? Too bad some models are 5400 RPM, making them worthless for me.

Seagate was a renowned company before they decided to prioritize money over quality. The decision to acquire maxtor and thus use bad people to produce HDDs has created a dreadful scenario for us. You say there are Seagate users happy but what you fail to mention is that Seagate drives don't last as much as others. If it breaks before 5 years then you have been scammed. That's for sure. And look how many complaints there are for countless Seagate models.

I thought after the 1.5 TB major issue their drives would be more secure, Guess I was wrong, it must be people using bad PSUs, not using proper nobreaks or cases, or even the postal service throwing the boxes as if they were indestructible and that didn't affect the life expectancy of said drives in the slightest.

Funny how only Seagate drives are the most affected. It must be a conspiracy.

To complicate things there is a duopoly. Now you can only choose between WD and Seagate. Better switch to SSD and use the internet to upload stuff that is replaceable. Invest in a good broadband connection to upload and download things, if your ISP censors you use VPN, don't trust in HDDs or media discs. That is a huge mistake.

I just found this thread while searching for a the Seagate Barracuda 2TB ST2000DM001. I had heard it was the best bang for buck but after reading this dispute I am now confused.
Trying not worsen this discussion I'll just ask. What alternatives are there to seagate that won't leave my wallet lighter than a feather, if any?

backblaze dont have complete review. some of the comparisons are not even the same capacity. and if not seagate than what. as i mostly saw buy or dont buy and why. so what is the alternative in the same price?
western digital green? or blue
as for me for 1Tb , seagate is around $ 62 , green $68 , blue $ 72, toshiba $62-65 (this is after converting from my currency.

Dont ever buy a western digital GREEN drive unless you want to open a future thread complaining things are slow.

I would suggest buying a WD faster drive but nowadays I am not going to. I think it's a waste of money to invest in something that is doomed to not last as long as other products from the past.

So yeah, my advice would be for you to choose SSD over HDDs. The Samsung EVO was highly recommended. Too bad this technology is still expensive, however it's more reliable and in the future just like now HDDs will be less and less used.

SSD is expensive and lower space too.
i am using wd green as my main drive with everything else work, torrents, streaming n so on. 250gb with 8gb/s, for past 4 years or more now. also had seagate same spec at the same time, and well i keep that as my backup n storage.
the reason i bought wd green was we had only seagate in our country as well i have more than 10 seagate hdd with data in them n all are not accessible.
as i dont play games for long time on pc, so i have no idea how it would have been on wd green.

but now since i have opinion of others Wd brand, blue ,red n even black (tooo expensive the black).

Seagate 2 years replacement, while Wd 1 replacement n second year they will charge me for it. (as the company who is bring WD is ass here)
second seagate is cheaper than green , blue n so on. seagate is $62 , WD green $70-72 , blue $72-74.

for some seagate is best while for others is crap. same for green too. but none had said anything abt blue

Get the Seagate or the WD blue.
A harddrive dying is just an inconvenience; you shouldn't worry about it as all your important data should have multiple backups which means all you have to do is a restore with a new drive and you're up and running again.

If you cant afford downtime then get two Harddrives and run them in raid1 but please note that you still need to do your backups.

i agree about the second part. the 1Tb might be my storage or even will separate in two drive n keeping one as storage n other 500gb as regular use. i might keep my green as my main c: full 250gb of it. n seagate 250 will be my third drive for my pictures n data.
so backup of the backup :) until SSD get cheaper

say what abt the hybrid drive? this is little expensive than regular drive... well not little expensive.
Seagate ST1000DX001 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s NCQ 3.5" Desktop Solid State Hybrid Drive = $ 87

Seagate Barracuda 2 TB SATA 6 GB/s NCQ 64 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive = $93

anyway, i think i should consider blue or seagate. any idea where i can review on both as together?

Seagate had quality drives but after 2008 it went to crap. I think they changed the suppliers or something. Go with Toshiba,Hitachi,Samsung and/or WD blue and up not green. There was a three year study on what drives have the highest failure rate and Hitachi had the lowest. Seagate had the worse and WD was average. http://www.pcworld.com/article/2089464/three-year-27-000-drive-study-reveals-the-most-reliable-hard-drive-makers.html

i read this report, but it does not shows or compare with 1Tb only. Also i was surprise no statement was issue by seagate.
the different between in WD Blue/green and seagate is the price and warranty. seagate is giving one year more than WD and seagate is around $62, while green n blue is around $72-80.
As the market is short of Wd blue i will wait till the new shipment comes, then reconfirm the price again.

No, both Seagate Barracuda, WD Blue, and WD Green have 2 years limited warranty.

As for prices... Right now, the 1TB versions cost nearly the same; Seagate Barracuda $53.98, WD Green $54.50, WD Blue $54.98. At 2TB the WD Green costs $81.68 while the Seagate Barracuda costs $82.12. The WD Blue doesn't seem to be available.

The ST2000DM001 Barracuda 2TB units have a very poor reliability record. I have taken over at an office where they had these drives in their NAS units and many many units have failed.

Backblaze have done a reliability test and these Seagates come out very badly. But they are cheap and they are not intended for 24 x 7 usage. Even so I would heavily suggest picking up a drive with a much better warranty. My personal preference is for the WD Black's the small additional cost pays for a much better drive. Otherwise the blue.
