Hi all,

I'm looking at getting a couple 2TB hard drives (one for storage and one for backup) and I'm looking at the Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148834

Anyone have any experience with these drives? Speed is not so much of a concern for me, I am utmost concerned about reliability as I want something that is going to last and not die on me right away (been there done that....NOT fun!)

For the combined price of both drives I'm trying to stay as close to $200 as possible (but a little over is ok).

Thanks,

The Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 drives are consumer drives, they are not intended for usage in NAS or in servers like Backblaze. It's not surprising that they fail more often when being used inappropriately.

Also the Backblaze article was pretty flawed since the different drives had different ages, and some were refurbished units.

Always look for datasheets, everyone has their opinions.... unfortunately thats all they are!

I have been building computers since 1995 and seagate drives have always been solid, I prefer them over any other conventional drive.

That being said for ssd drives ocz Vertex 460 ( yes my latest purchase ) absolutely love them....

Hope this helps

Hi,

I have 2 ST2000DM001 running in water-cooled mirror RAID along with 1 Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD for more than 2 years 24\7 mode, flawlessly in my 2000USD fully watercooled silent multi purpose (gaming, remote heating control, security server with 4 cameras, 3D drawing, video server,...) IT device ;o)))

My suggestion? Get it! ST2000DM001 is a stunning drive!

Bye!

As a previous 1T Seagate I used for "data dumping" (so switch on/off once every month) died in around18 months (back in 2013),I decided to purchase TWO 2T ST2000DM001, so to have the first cloned in the second.
You know what?

Yesterday BOTH did NOT turn on ... (20 months in service). All lost.
I am sure it is not an electrical problem, neither a USB bus problem, nor a SW problem ...

Now I have two bricks ...

Looking for a Seagate alternative, definetily...

Hi trying to get another one of these as the last one i have has crashed. 15 years of storage down the drain. Its not reading the disk, but apparently the data is still there 50-50 chance of recovering it.This drive was a year old......
Reluctant to spend money on this rubbish drive again but the data is important,if i do manage to get the data of i'll look into a decent reliable drive maybe 2 x 1 terrabytes instead..my advice look for something better as data at times is more important than the cost ..

whatever you decide good luck.

I have a friend that got all 3 of his external seagate HDD break down around a year, not sure about the internal one though.

You can try look into these for some idea, it's base on statistic. https://www.backblaze.com/blog/what-hard-drive-should-i-buy/

It's mostly being unlucky because i heard some consumer are not ok with the Hitachi too. For me i choose WD since all my friends, my ex company and current one all use WD external or internal, and haven't got any issue with them so far.

Hi, all,

you guys talking bad about the Seagate barracuda drives. I had 2 750gb sata 2 hard drives in raid 1 I never had a problem had it for 8 years str and never had a problem. Unto my motherboard crashed and wouldn't boot up. so I went ahead and put them away. and some how stupid me I stock them up on each other. now fining out if you do that they will break. I found out they was no longer working when I plug them in to a external drive. and they wouldn't boot up or show in DM. so yea that's my fault. I always used Seagate and never had a problem.

I can join the group of warnings. I have 2 of these drives bought in september 2013. The first failed end october 2015 with 4600 bad sectors - just out of warranty. The second failed today. Until december no errors. Today 8500 bad sectors.

I also had a 3 TB external drive that failed after 22 months. It was replaced under warranty. But I had to pay expensive shipping to NL, because they dont have a service center here in Belgium.

For me that is 3 out of 3. Never again Seagate.

My WD and HGST (Hitachi) drives has never failed me, and I have 2 WD 500 GB drives that has been running 24/7 for 9 years now, and there is nothing reported in SMART

I am an IT guy and normally I favor Seagates, as they have been quite reliable. The last 3 months, though, proved me wrong. I have 3 2TB (ST2000DM001) drives that have all failed. They are out of warranty, so I am SOL. I am sure that they are just a bad batch. Hopefully I won't have any more returns. As a suggestion, it is always good practice to back up your stuff.

Hey guyz!

Well, its about 3 years now since I have built up the beastie silicon-filled iron made time consuming piece of furniture...my PC, thats what I am talking about... Since that, it changed only a little bit, namely from ASUS P7P55D-E Premium + Core i7 875K to ASUS Z97 Deluxe + Xeon E3-1231v3. The rest is just the same...

Means the 2x2TB ST2000DM001 mirror RAID are still running 100% ;o))) I will post the core data of usage soon as I remember I want to do it while sitting by the screen ;o))) Is it the water cooling that keeps the drives at about room temperatures or was I only lucky with the driver series...?

My own experience with Seagate has been relatively positive. The one time I bought a WD drive it failed rather quickly on me. I have a Seagate ST3500641AS-RK 500GB from back in 2009 that I had to reformat in 2011 after the file system was corrupted while housed in a HP media server. After recovering the data and refomatting it, there were no problems until a few months ago, when the controller board went out (I suspect). I have a ST3750640NS-IM 750GB since 2011 that I bought used that is working real well. I have a 1TB ST1000VM002 (Pipeline) that is working well for the past two years, and just got a 2TB Constellation last year. I'd advise getting the Pipeline or the Constellation, you can find the 2TB just as cheaply as the Barracuda in question. Don't get any Seagate that is 3TB, I think Seagate just got sued for shipping out so many 2TB that had issues.

I would also add that all of my drives (except for the one pulled from the media server) were bought USED on Ebay. No hassle with trying to RMA new drives that fail after a few days or a few weeks. Perhaps I have been extraordinarily lucky, but I would conclude that if the seller on Ebay has good ratings, you can rely on the drive to be good, or else for the seller to make good on it (the first 750 GB one had to be sent back and he sent me a different one).

I have had 2 Seagate Baracuda 2TB Drives fail in the past Month, could restore the data of them but the are FUBAR and full of bad sectors now andu seable to re-put data on after cleans and formats etc. DO NOT BUY SEAGATE. Try HITACHI or TOSHIBA have never had one fail, WD is my 3rd fav but still in my opinion not as good as HITACHI or TOSHIBA..

In reply I realised I have three of these hard drives...one in my computer working and two having the click of death. On the still working hard drive in my computer sounds now and then like that of the heads scratching platter surface.
I found some other old Seagate hard drives which are not good at all... (don't work and/or register on disk manager).
In finding other old brand made hard drives they still work.
My answer - no more Seagate hard drives...
