Hey guys

I purchased a 5TB Expansion external HDD yesterday and I'm having issues getting it to work. The drive is not detected under disk management, diskpart or My Computer. It is only visible under Device Manager. I read that I might have to initialize it, but I don't know how to do that when it's not visible at all. I have tried using SeaTools and plugging it in to a friend's laptop running Windows 7 (I'm running Windows 8.1), but his laptop had the same issues, with the drive visible only under Device Manager. Hope you can figure this out, or tell me if the drive is faulty

That's strange. In Windows 7 (I don't use 8) you can't initialize the drive unless it is visible in Disk Management. When you see the device in the Device Manager, is there a token like a yellow triangle with an exclamation point inside it? It should at least show as a Raw device in Disk Management.

Without knowing a blessed thing about the hardware, my first two tries are always
1) Remove the HDD from the USB enclosure and attach it directly to the motherboard, if it's a single HDD (but at 5 TB, it probably isn't
2) Boot into something like Parted Magic or EASEUS Partition Editor.

What make and model is the expansion drive? USB, Firewire, smokesignals, eSATA, what connection?

It's a 5TB Seagate Expansion. And no there is no yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager, the driver's install fine I guess.
