We had a power outage 2 days ago and I'm having issues with my Seagate Business Storage 2-Bay NAS. It is backed up by a Tripp Lite UPS but the power was off for several hours so the UPS ran out of backup power and the NAS just turned off without a proper shut down and when the power came back on it powered up, all the while I was at work.

The first sign of trouble was no access to the NAS so upon inspection it was making a loader than usual fan noise and the HDD's were both very warm. I tried to open in my Seagate NAS Discovery and instead of all the drop downs it only showed Disk Management and when clicked it showed both 4 TB HGST NAS Drives but each as Foreign. Prior to this issue, this setup has worked flawlessly, drive is not set up as Raid but just simple storage at 7.75TB.

I do have most data backed up but spent some dollars and would like to salvage the drives and data if possible. I have researched and found where to claim a drive or change it from dynamic to simple but I don't know how to access it on my pc in Disk Management. I pulled one of them out and connected it directly to my pc via a USB and it shows 15 or so partitions and when I click on one of the partitions it says I need to format to use the drive. I reinstalled the drive and powered the NAS back up to see if anything changed but same thing.

Also could the NAS be damaged and if so can I just get a new on and reseat the HDD's and it work?

Can someone give some options to try?

Thanks in advance!!!

I do a lot of remote NAS data recovery work and I have seen failed Seagate Business NAS devices many times. I can tell you that internally the NAS operates using Linux software RAID aka mdadm. Your data partition should be partition 10.

If your goal is data recovery then do not change the drives in any way. Don't format or change drive type or do anything that writes to the drives.

The first thing is to check the status of the drives. You can use a tool like CrystalDiskInfo to see the SMART health status of your drives. If all is well you can try RAID recovery software like R-Studio or UFSexplorer etc. to get at your data. If you get stuck shoot me a PM I am happy to help remotely.

I have the exact same issue, but have brought the offending NAS home. Am I able to work on it from here or should I leave it attached to the original network? S Haran....would love to chat directly with you.
