I've been using 2 refurbished 1TB HDs from Seagate for over 5 years. Haven't had any problems with them. Next year I will be upgrading all three of my 3.5" hard drives to SSDs. Hopefully the price on 2TB SSDs will be a little more reasonable then.

This sort of thing is the only way I'd really consider getting a refurbished drive at this point in time.

The storefront itself isn't new, but the important part here is:
Seagate Technology Holdings plc (NASDAQ: STX), a leading innovator of mass-capacity data storage, announced its sustainability collaboration with e-commerce site eBay. The agreement establishes Seagate’s official storefront on eBay as a direct channel for consumers to access factory-recertified hard drives as part of the Seagate Circularity Program.
This is to minimize the amount of HDDs that end up shredded when they could be used further instead which is probably why the drives they're advertising are predominantly enterprise.

The story said "rare earth materials used in mechanical hard drives cannot be re-used". That is not true. Just search "recycling neodymium magnets". Also, you might see K&J Magnetics pop up on the search. They are my favorite place to buy Neodymium Magnets. Check out the plastic coated ones, they are excellent Fridge Magnets.

I have purchased some factory refurb items and only got the shaft a few times. I am glad they are doing this but I will pass. I have Rarely had a Hard Drive fail. When it does happen, it can be a major pain. OF COURSE if I had backed up my data more often, it would be not big deal.

To expand its Hard Drive Circularity Program and reduce electronic waste, Seagate is now selling its refurbished and recertified mechanical hard drives through eBay for attractive prices.

Since I was a founding member of setting up this process let me explain it to you and others.... We take drives that we can't sell as new and ship them to Vietnam to be tested by a third party. The third party uses our software to test the drives and electrically depop heads that do not meet spec. I saw one drive that had 20 heads depopped to two heads was a 12 tb drive and became a 1 tb drive and sold with what is called a white label. None of these drives are refurbished, they are retested. Failures are scrapped in Vietnam and supposedly shredded in Vietnam. Most of the drives are from extended testing, labs, offices and other places in the buildings. So most of the drives have been shipped from the US at a dollar a drive to be retested in vietnam where they can dispose of the scrap easier than here in the US.

Because as we all well know, WD has never done anything wrong or shady and should be fully trusted to the ends of the earth.

Seagate do this for years. Can't trust new. Refurb I will pass
Well that and they are not refurbished, they are sent to vietnam to be retested at a third party and relabled and sold. They can be electrically depoped... I know I was one of the people that set up the process... and I would not buy one.

Seagate have a long story of bad choices maxtor and samsung (hdd division).
Seagate have good drivers after the Thailand flood... Before that it's only downfall, the Chinese drivers are the worst. WD drivers and toshiba ones can last a little longer give some peace to your soul...

here in my country they reset the smart make the used disk new again... If you don't have good ears to listen the needle or the seek... even the motor spindle you tell the disk is a new one.

Don't buy for cheap or you will destroy your precious data... "Lord of disk" return of hdd regenerator.
