My father's computer running XP Home started refusing to do the Search for
files after recent automatic updates (probably SP2, etc.). When you start a
search for files, it immediately calls for windows installer to install some
component from XP Pro and calls for an XP Pro disk. This pc has never had
Pro. What is going on? We can't use the Search feature at all.

Show the hidden files and folders Rightclick C:\Windows\Inf\srchasst.inf Click install. The required file is in ../I386 folder on
the XP CD

or

extra toolbars, etc can be managed in SP2 on the IE, Tools menu, click "Manage AddOns"

Mark,
You replied to Brett regarding the problem in searching for files and a
request popping up for XP pro disk. I just upgraded to XP and am experiencing
the exact same problem, but unfortunately don't fully understand your reply.
Are you saying I need to go back to the XP CD that installed the upgrade to
XP and install another file? Sorry I'm so lame, but I hope you don't mind
restating your directions in simplier terms
Thanks
Ken

Mark,
My problem is similar to Bretts regarding the request for a search. I just
upgraded to XP and now when doing a search of any kind, it requests I load
Office 2000 Proferssional and it just keeps running me in a loop. How can I
eliminate this? Very frustrating
Thanks
Ken
