Second GTX 970 for SLI when their prices eventually drop, or wait for the 1070(Maybe 1080)

Sadly AMD had to be chumps and aren't planning on releasing high performance cards to rival Nvidia Pascal, so I'm going team green again. I already have a 970, I know the Pascal cards will be down on a smaller node, so that would probably bring huge improvements and all, but think SLI'd 970's would be better performance wise than a 1080? I don't think it would be worthwhile to upgrade to only a 1070, might as well get 60% more performance if I'm spending $5-600.

we won't know what the better idea is until we see some cards in the wild and they are benchmarked. so you can only guess but it won't be for too long since we get some official info today on the 1070 and 1080.

hopefully we can find some solid sli numbers to match the single card Pascal numbers with. there are already plenty of 970 sli numbers out there, just need to see how the new cards stack up and what price they will be at.

and i'm not sure where you got the rumor of amd?? they got a ton in the works as well and will of course address the high end as well as low end with the new cards. you been fed a line of BS if you believe they won't be putting out high end cards to match nvidia's. that's just silly talk

From what I understand, Polaris is going to be up against some Pascal cards, just not at the very high end, they're not going to be challenging the replacement for the 980 Ti for example, until the next Fiji type GPU codenamed Vega. They will Have something up against the 1070 and the 1080 in Polaris.

Yeah, I am on the same boat mate, R9 390 here. Dont go SLI, just wait. Our GPUs can handle pretty much everything right now, maybe we settle for 8X AA instead of 16X but I think that aint such a big deal. Just wait for the 1070 and 1080. In all honestly, I will probably wait for Vega from AMD in early 2017. Its not like there are games our GPUS cant handle so maybe waiting a bit will be for the best . Regardless, buying 28nm GPUS when there are 16nm and 14nm gpus out there is not wise, you are pretty much throwing your money away

If you look at prices when do they really drop. When they actually do there is usually a shortage of the one you need heck look on amazon and newegg for a 770 or 780 check those prices. used would be the way to go if you want a price drop. after people that seem to need the latest and greatest have upgraded and selling their old cards. My neighbors like that he doesn't know a lot about building them but reads all the hype i got my 980s from him after he was sure he needed 980tis hell they were only 3months old i got them for 300bucks each he said he didnt want to mess with ebay or advertising them i offered more but he said all good money wasn't the issue.
This was 2 weeks after buying one retail for my wifes system for 460.

Also bear in mind that 2 970's in SLI (when SLI works correctly) is slightly ahead of a single 980 Ti @ 1080p, one 1080 is rumoured to be ahead of the 980 Ti. We may find out in 5 minutes lol.

i think that if you can get a cheap 970 in sli you can get a 970 we know that the next gpu the x80 will be about the equal power as the 980 ti and a 970 sli at 1080p is more powerful than 980 ti

what we were told last night is that a new 1070 will beat a titan x. i don't think sli 970's get even close to that performance level. seems to me that unless you can get a 970 for dirt cheap, then a new 1070 in june/july (once a bunch of models are out) would be a better option for overall performance. but if you are sticking to 1080p then a single 970 should still be plenty of power for now.

I was gonna wait for Polaris 10 but I think I'll just get a GTX 1070. The $379 launch price is awesome too, probably about £319.

never know what amd has up it's sleeve. if it was going ot be 6 months before we knew anything, i'd probably go with 1070 myself but since we should have some solid info by the end of this month, i'd wait and see what develops. amd might undercut some pricing forcing a big change in the market, never really know how it is gonna play out. i'm gonna sit back for a few months and see what happens myself.

i think a 970 sli is good for 1080p though but thats my thoughts

weak in what sense? if what you have does what you need it to do, who cares if there is something newer/better/faster. if it does not do what you want, then yah it would be considered weak.

but don't let the hype get in the way of common sense. a 970 is plenty for 1080p right now and should be for a time to come. if you want to move up in resolution then more power is needed for sure.

Polaris 10 is mid tier, 1070,1080 are high tier. Vega will be AMDs high tier, launching early 2017

Polaris 10 is going to include the replacement for the 380/X and 390/X, the equivalent to the 1070 and 1080, Vega is going to replace the Fury line.
