Second hard drive red

Hi I seem to have some kind of issues with my second hard drive which I belive is a internal backup. My system is windows 7 64bit 2.2ghz 2gibyte ddr2 500gibyte hd. I bought the system over 2 years ago with the internal backup. Three days ago I needed some files that I need to to retrieve from the backup, click computer, in the list my backup which is listed as drive E the bar under the drive is red. Thinking as it means nothing, until I tried access the drive. There is no response not even error messages. It is not even gray out, it just not responding at all. What dose
This red indicator mean? Dose it mean the hard drive is dead? What can I do to retrieve my files
I am not much of a computer know how and really need urgent help, any help from the toms hardware community I consider as true blessings and grateful. Thank You.

usually a red bar means the drive is full or near full.

right click on it and choose Properties, it should show a pie-chart displaying how much is used.

Try a data recovery software like Easus Data recovery check if the files are getting recovered.
