Reinstalled 7 last week and forgot to disable all the power saving stuff, now my second monitor is stuck in power saving mode. If I print screen and paste it the extended desktop is there, if I turn the monitor on and off the desktop briefly appears for a second and it's the same if I change the resolution or any other settings in the resolution/nvidia control panel. Monitor is an LG Flatron W1946 connected via VGA cable/VGA to DSUB to a 9600GT. Any ideas or help is appreciated, cheers.

make sure drivers are up to date. Disable the monitor in settings and re-enable it. remove the VGA plug and make sure its plugged in all the way.

I dont think its in sleep mode but disabled in settings or about to die. I had a monitor die on me that would only get an orange, standby light when plugged into DVI :(

PS... all the "power saving stuff" is controlled by Windows and the monitor does not save that info. During your reinstall of Windows it would have returned all values to default.

Aye I've reseated all the cables, disabled and renabled it, left it unplugged etc. By the Windows thing I meant that it was fine on my old installation but seems to have only started after the reinstall. I did notice the monitor made an odd sound for a few seconds last week, almost like a hissing sound: bad caps maybe? Just seems odd that I can see the monitor/mouve the mouse on it briefly before it goes off again/ Cheers.

Thinking more about this, I do think the monitor is bad. If you can do a print screen and that shows the expanded monitor that would indicate that windows is displaying the info but the monitor is not receiving the info.

Do you have another monitor that you can test the ports on the back of the PC? I think this would boil down to GPU port (unlikely), bad VGA cable (also unlikely) or monitor problems.

When I had a monitor go off I could remote into the computer (using LogMeIn) and see the monitor but could never get it to come on. The monitor would stay in standby.

Second monitor wont work on either port (apart from briefly showing for a second), main monitor works on both ports, tried with different cables and left PC/Monitor unplugged all night then plugged back in and still nothing. Safe to assume monitor is dead?

Sure sounds like it, yes. See if you have a warranty.
