Hi all,

I'm prepared to build a new PC, no gaming, mainly for graphic editing such as enhancing the quality of old photos and old video captured on VHS and V8 tapes.

The PC shall also serve as backup server of live websites. I'll install VirtualBox on it with 4 VMs running 40 cloned websites. The cloned websites are not all running at the same time. They serve as the backup sites for the live websites running on Internet. Should there is any problem on the live websites I just clone the local website to replace the problematic live website. Periodically I'll run the local cloned websites to upgrade their software.

Preliminary planning configuration;

CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X

Graphic card - I have a MSI GeForce GTX 1650 graphic card resting on shelves.

MSI GeForce GTX 1650 Super Gaming X Dual Fan Graphics Card - 4 GB
https://www.memoryc.com/31006-msi-geforce-gtx-1650-super-gaming-x-dual-fan-graphics-card-4-gb.html

Brand-new power supply also available:
Corsair CX550M 550 Watt
https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categ...-Units/cxm-series-2015-config/p/CP-9020102-NA

RAM - DDR4/DDR5 32G/64G

HDD - 1TB NVMe PCIe Gen4x4 SSD for running OS and other software

Virtualization - Oracle VirtualBox

HDD - 4TB WD, already available, for data storage only, without OS installed.

  1. Please recommend an ASUS motherboard ?
  2. Shall I pick DDR4 or DDR5 ?
  3. Do I need 64G RAM or 32G will be suitable for my use ?

Thanks in advance.

(Remark: The reason to indicate ASUS brand is;
I have been using ASUS motherboard for long time.
It never failed letting me disappointed.

Other brand also will be considered)

Regards

Any motherboard to match ?

In case you buy non-K models, without overlocking support, you will be fine with B660 board. Looks at MSI B660 Mortar, there is review on this web-site as well. K models make sense only with Z690 boards, of course it will be more expensive. No overclocking planned - stick to B660. Good Z690 board will be not less than 230-250 approximately.

F - models does not have internal GPUs and cheaper. As you have Video Cards, you can save some money and buy F models.

Co BIY

Splendid
Looks solid to me.

If the machine is running 24/7 for the back up servers then upgrading your PSU choice to a higher line (RMx vs CX) with more efficiency seems worth it to me.

This RMx650 is only $15 more than the one you listed. RMx is built better and Gold level efficiency.

I like a 2 TB main drive since I seem to run up against the 1TB limit. Something mainstream like the Crucial P5 plus is affordable at 2TB.

  1. Shall I pick DDR4 or DDR5 ?

There is do DDR5 for AM4 socket, therefore you have to choose DDR4 in case you stick to Ryzen 5800x. Alternatively you can try to look on Intel 12700F/12700/12700k, which is competitor of Ryzen 5800x and check benchmarks if for your workloads Intel would be better.

No. Your cpu limits M.2_1 slot to PCIE 3.0 operating mode.

Yes.
Yes, just use longer SATA cables so they can reach to outside.
Yes, I have it like that, Sneaked cables thru one of PCI slots at back of case and used SATA power cable extension.

The machine is not running 24/7. The live websites are running on the server of hosting company. I only run the machine for daily work.

Also I prefer 2TB NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD but its price is quite expensive. My daily working machine, the main drive is running Samsung 1TB NVMe PCIe 3.0 SSD. Now only about 100G space left. Samsung 2TB NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD is quite expensive.

Which motherboard is suggested by you ? Thanks

In case you buy tray model (without cooler), you need to buy some cooler additionally. For example BeQuiet Dark Rock 4.
