So I have a pre build hp gaming pc and was wondering if i could run my new rtx 2060 safely off of a separate psu since the psu in the system was proprietary... Id only be running like this for a week untill I've received my new mobo.
How high would the risk be? I mean It seems that a few people use to do it before 2017 and then after that no one did.Not safely, no.

So would I have to purchase an adapter? The standard for non-proprietary motherboards is 20+4 for the main power and a dedicated 4-pin (or 4+4 pin these days) for the CPU.

Well thats what im asking the psu i just bought is a standard 600w psu and the one in the hp is proprietary. It powers the the mobo and psu from separate 4 pin connectors. Would the standard psu be able to replace the proprietary one? After a resounding no about 2 psus i was hoping i could use the standard on this mobo. When it comes to power supplies, you NEVER want to use an adapter. If your current power supply doesn't have the correct cables, it should be replaced.
