Could this be the thing where you lower power so the signal just gets through? While for the lowest bits they go even lower so you get probabilities that the signal gets through of e.g. 0.9 or 0.8 This could explain the power requirements.

Where is ATI/AMD in all this when you need 'em?!

Oh, yeah... They just entered the Netbook playground with Brazos. Hopefully they can shrink down to Smartphones soon enough to get these things cheaper. Prices ATM are just a big laugh.

Cheers!

Do they understand that even if they do this (unlikely as it may be), someone will come by, take that chip, put four of them in a desktop, and overclock it to oblivion such that it would make smartphones vs PC a joke, again?

It's really weird when a company goes on about smartphone efficiency and fails to realize the same truth holds for desktops.

Keep in mind these graphics are powering a much smaller screen than what laptops and desktops.

In 3-4 years desktop chips will be much faster than they are now. So I do not see this being possible in this time frame. If Smart Phone CPUs ever become as fast as top end desktop or even low end desktop CPUs then I can see them as a valid option for full fledged PCs. Especially since they use such small amounts of energy. I guess we shall stay tuned!

OK even IF they are telling the truth, and these mobile GPU's will compete with desktop GPU's(which ones?!? the $40 Radeon HD 5450?)...I have 2 questions.

1. How many thousands of dollars will it cost me?
2. How the FU!# will it only consume a milliwatt of power?!?

You're gonna look really dumb when you have to carry a water cooling block in your pocket in order to cool the GPU in your phone if they try to shove as much horsepower into it as a desktop GPU has.

I wouldn't mind having my phone as a desktop computer. Just have the monitor with all the connections for USB, esata, etc. Then connect the phone to the monitor and have desktop graphics...Too bad it won't be desktop graphics, because you could just have several of these chips in a desktop type CPU/GPU combo that would blow any phone processor away. Once we are at photo realism in games and everything is almost instant on a phone setup; that is when I will buy a phone as a desktop computer.

[citation][nom]xophaser[/nom]PowerVR, I thought they went out of business when Nvidia, 3dfx, ati destroyed them back in the 90s.[/citation]
yeah i have seen their chips randomly in various devices. I think the company got bought out a few times and they were smart enough not to bother competing in desktop graphics and move over to something that they could actually make money from.
