Hi folks,

Does anyone have try to build a server or any type of server with this
motherboard and CPU. If you did, did you encounter any problem
during your build?
I am planning to build a file server with potential other duty like web server,
FTP server also with this motherboard and CPU. I like to maintain my
computer building skills and also want to get deeper into the server world.
I also planning to use FREEBSD as the Operating System on this build.

SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SLM+-F-O uATX Server Motherboard LGA 1150 Intel C224 DDR3 1600

Intel Xeon E3-1276 v3 Haswell 3.6GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1150 84W Server Processor

Thanks folks for all your help.

You might want to look at FreeNAS which is a tailored version of FreeBSD for the OS. You have WAY MORE cpu than is required for a file server. I would be more inclined to get a E3-1265L v3 -- 45W CPU if this is just sitting idle most of the time, which is what file servers do.

Thanks you for your reply Kanewolf.
Well basicly, I want this server to be mainly file server at first, but then a few thought come to mind.
I wanted to expand it to other duty like webserver, FTP server, and perhap may do some virtual operating
system on it as I want to go deeper into the server end side just to gain more knowledge. Perhap will also
set it up to be application server too, not to sure on this one yet. Reason I choose this CPU because it seem to
fit the role what I wanted to do without sacrifice speed. Thanks again for your suggestion.

Unless you have significant network infrastructure to back up the 3.6Ghz CPU it is wasted. You would need a 10GE infrastructure and dozens of clients to benefit from that CPU as a file server. An Intel Atom CPU or Celeron CPU will more than handle 1GE network loading.

Thanks for you input Kanewolf.
Well, I guess you are right about the wasted thing, but I'm willing to get this CPU just for the fun of it :).
Let just put the waste thing aside, Do you know there be a problem using this CPU
and this SuperMicro Motherboard? Is there any update bios required? I guess
I can call SuperMicro and ask them and see what they say after all the are the
manufacture of this board.

I have no way of knowing about compatibility. Web page says is supports V3 CPUs. The one thing I did notice on the supermicro webpage is that they have a specific list of supported DIMMs. I guess you need to be sure any RAM choice you make is on the supported list. It is also interesting that the only RAM they list is ECC. Be careful in your RAM choice don't assume that any Corsair or Kingston RAM will work ....
