service control manager with non-admin users

Hi all...
My guest account encounters service control manager errors over and over to
the point that I can not use it. So I created a new account. That account
worked fine until I changed it from an admin to a user account. Now it too
gets the service control manager error (though maybe not as much).
What is this? and how can I stop it?
I thank you very much...
John

Hi John,

What is the exact error message? I mean word for word. When does it happen,
under what programs?

Hi Nutcase (great name!)!
when I log onto my guest acount, I get these little messsages on the screen,
in this order:
"SCMan
Access is Denied
OK"

"ANIOApi
Failed to open service control manager"

"SCMan
Can't open service control manager"

If I click OK on the first message, the 3rd message pops up.

All the messages pop up in boxes like the standard Windows message (like the
"Are you sure you want to delete this file" message)

hope this helps!
John

Hi,

The forbot worm that is infecting your system doesn't like the non-admin
accounts, it doesn't have sufficient privileges to run, see:
http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/w32forbotcw.html for removal
instructions.

Hi Rick...
Thanks for the link to the virus info. The info there does look exactly like
what I am experiencing, but I have run 2 different anti-virus programs, and
neither seem to have come up with that worm. The registry entries it mentions
are not on my system, though I may have deleted them either manually (I did a
regedit for scm*.*) or via one of the anti-virus programs I ran.
I do still get the error message, though.,
Any other tips/help/suggestions?
Thanks again
John

Hi,

Did you try the worm removal steps here?
http://www.sophos.com/support/disinfection/worms.html

Viruses are verygood at hiding themselves, it's not always bluntly obvious.
