Setting IRQs with XP

I have an HP734n that had the on-board sound decide to stop working. No
problem right? I purchased a Creative PCI Sound card to replace the on-board,
plugged it into my open pci slot, installed the software and thought I was a
computer genius. Until I tried to use my scanner plugged into the USB. Then
I realized that anything plugged into the USB when the sound card is in the
pci slot will not work. Creative told me to assign the sound card to a IRQ 5
setting. It is currently set to IRQ 17, the USB ports are all set to IRQ 21.

How do you change the IRQ settings?
I have Windows XP Home Edition and SP2 installed. Every time I have gone
through the control panel to the system to
the properties to see if I could change IRQ settings and they are all grayed
out (I can't currently adjust anything).

Help, I need to use the scanner and have the sound for learning about some
graphic programs.

Keith, did you try a different PCI Slot? Did you go into the Bios and
disable the onboard sound device?

Yes, on both accounts. I also eliminated the hardware from the computer
through the control panel and let Windows find and reinstall the hardware on
the next restart.

After reading the various comments in other newsgroups it is clear that I am
not the only one who has had this issue with XP. What I am amazed at is that
MS wouldn't have thought of a user friendly way to fix this problem. OK, I'm
also pissed at HP for having cheap on board sound that goes bad after 2 years
of easy use (no gaming, surround sound, or anything more taxing than a Stevie
Ray Vaughn CD. Enough ranting have any help?

It's often the case with some motherboards that onboard USB is disabled when
a certain PCI slot is filled. It's not a Microsoft or an XP issue, it's the
way the motherboard was built in the first place and the issue is with the
motherboard manufacturer.
