Setting up a PC

I'm trying to set up my new gaming pc, but it just crashes. I'm not sure whether I need to boot from the hard drive (which is from my old pc and has windows XP installed on it) or boot it from the DVD drive, which has the disc that came with the motherboard.

Here is the list of my components in case they help:
AMD FX-6300 Black edition
ASUS M5A97 EVO R2.0
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 TI
CORSAIR VEANGEANCE 8GB (2x4GB)
WD 250GB HDD
CIT Pentium p4 550W PSU

Do you have any important files in the hard drive? Cause I would try to install windows 8.1 on it.

I just realised that I didn't actually select the right drive to boot from, my mistake.

No problem. I would still suggest you install windows 8.1. It's much faster.
