ok guys I got a machine and a copy of windows 2003 server (enterprise ed.) I'd like to set up a web page server. What must I do? I just want a way to access some files from anywhere, perhaps there is a better solution tho. I need a cheap way to do this, if I can get around regestering a domain namem it would be nice, I'm rather broke. Pretty much a newb at this but I'd like to learn if just to quench my boredom. Thanks.

I got apache 2.0.4 for windows running but I'm having no success figuring it out. All the guides I'm finding are for earlier linux versions.

Setting up Server Services...
Well, actually everything ya need is already available in all versions of windows from Win 2k up...(maybe not in XP home). IIS(M$'s Web Server) and FTP server services are already in Windows - It's already there and free!!! Just add windows components from add/remove programs in control panel....

So ya really don't need need anything else - software wise... Just fire up IIS and FTP from your windows CD! It's there!

Per accessing your machine from the internet without registering a domain name, your sortta stuck, but there are some options... Accessin your machine by IP rather than name is the easiest. Choosing a broadband ISP that gives ya a static IP is an easy way. Or once ya connect, post your Ip somewhere so others can get your current IP. Or get someone to host a link to your box, and keep the link updated with your current IP...

However, hosting server services with normal ISP services will either limit your upload speed to dialup speed or throttle your broadband upload(server) services to common upload limits.

One can also establish a personal VPN ( Virtual Private Network) thru internet connection...

But, its a big GottcYa - Want speed, ya gotta pay for it!

www.fmip.org
you run a client app on your computer and it sends your current ip to its home server. you can log in and check your ip on the website and they have a free resolution service, you just have to type username.fmip.org and it will resolve to your ip.
