Hi everyone, I want to set up a home lab to help me study for my ccna. However I do not want to set this up in the same room as my home router. Would using a powerline to connect the cisco router in another room do the job?

Solution
A powerline appears as a ethernet cable. Problem is you are limited in what you can configure via ethernet. You can't do the initial configuration. You then have to be very careful about what you change since you can't change anything that affects the ability of the router to talk to your pc doing the configuration.
1 cisco router is not going to get you very far most things require mulitple. That is why most people use simulators. It been so long since I looked at these I forget the names. There is at least 1 free one.

You must be extremely new to cisco if you plan to do configuration via the network. Cisco routers are mostly configured via the console port. This is a serial connection and since PC no longer have serial ports you have to get a USB serial port adapter. You would need a fairly expensive device to be able to run a console port over the network.

Thank you for the reply.

I already know the cost implications, wiring and adapters i would need and simulation vs home lab benefits. I am not only buying one router, i would just like to know if they would function the same using powerline as being directed connected to my home router.
