Having purchase an m5a99fx pro r2 I contacted g skill about their 2133 ram as it was not listed on the boards qvl. They told me that it would work fine but is not plug and play. Is all that means is that I have to go to advanced bios and manually set the speed, which i plan on running at 1866.

link to the ram, hopefully the did not mean i would have to do a bios update first as that would mean It would not post to even to the bios update

No, official or not, any RAM should work... the only inconvenience is it's 1.65V when it should be 1.5v but as long as the motherboard supports 1.65v RAM, there shouldn't be a problem.... you just have to tweak the BIOS settings as necessary to reach the mhz speed both CPU and motherboard support. The motherboard may be set to 1.5v by default and you probably have to set it to 1.65v... but first try changing the setting to 1866Mhz, save the BIOS settings and exit, restart the computer and check the BIOS again...
That RAM is 1.65 volt, the motherboard supports 1.35v, 1.5v and 1.65v according to the QVL list... the specific RAM model is not listed but RAM is RAM so it should work the same as any 1.65v that's listed. http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/SocketAM3+/M5A99FX_PRO_R20/M5A_Series_DRAM_QVL_201406.pdf

So, the motherboard should auto adjust to 1866Mhz if you're using a AM3+ FX CPU... AM3 Athlon or Phenom only support up to 1333Mhz RAM. So, if you have a FX CPU and the RAM is not running at 1866Mhz, you have to overclock it manually from the BIOS RAM speed settings. You may also have to increase the RAM voltage to 1.65v to make it run at 1866Mhz.

So, which CPU are you using?
In the BIOS, at what speed is the RAM running now? and at what volts?

i believe its that xmp ram tho, would i be better off spending the extra money to get official amd ram like the r9 gamer series made by amd/radeon? I keep going back and forth because of black friday prices on everything

I am doing the build now, and ordering part during black friday, so it's not running anything at the moment lol. Would it be cooler on the board if i just got some 1866 ram running at 1.5 v like the g skill ares or the r7 gamer instead?
