sfc scannow command problem

I am trying to use sfc / scannow.

I cannot boot Vista so I am using the Dell Vista installation disk, and its command prompt utility.

When I try to use sfc, I get the message: 'Windows resource protection could not perform operation'.

Can someone tell me how to overcome this problem?

If I can scan, how can I initiate repairs?

If the Dell disk doesn't land you in C:\ at the Command Prompt, it may be using a RAM drive or showing the directory of the optical drive. Use the command c: then press Enter and try sfc /scannow at the C:\ prompt.

Try running Checkdisk first, using the syntax chkdsk c: /r to find and attempt to fix any disk errors.
