Hi folks,

(I have a feeling this is a really stupid question).

So I'm unsuccessfully trying to share a folder between my Windows 7 PC and my Windows 8 Laptop.

I 've set up a Homegroup on the PC but when I try to join it with the Laptop I get the error message: “windows cant set up a homegroup on this computer”.

So I've since managed to set up a public folder (based on the PC) which I can access on both computers.

The problem I have though is that I can only access the folder on the Laptop if my PC is switched on.

Is there anything I can do to solve this? What I'm looking for is a way to access the shared folder on the Laptop if the PC is switched off.

Thanks in advance,

To share a folder using Windows Homegroup, the PC will need to be on. This is because the data stays on the hard drive, and the folder is identified to be shared.

If you do not wish to leave your PC on all the time, a cloud drive, such as Google Drive or Microsoft's Cloud Drive may be a better solution. Because the data gets uploaded to "The cloud," it gets hosted by the provider, and your computer does not need to remain on.
