hi, so recently upgraded to a 1080 and i have paired it with an i7 2600k,
i do get pretty high fps on games such as overwatch/black ops 4,

however every game i play suffers from very sharp fps drops that cause a stuttering effect in game, any ideas what could cause this? or how i can go about trying to source the problem
its not temp related as it occurs as soon as i play any game and both cpu and gpu are sitting it very modest temps
help much appreciated!

Solution
No worries, and yes moving to wqhd will remove some load from the cpu. But only if the gpu falls under the target framerate.
What you should do anyways is to monitor the graphs for cpu and gpu usage using msi afterburner and rsst. With rsst you will even be able to monitor the framerate and frametime during gaming.
After s gaming session you can look up the exact moments when the framerate dropped and check if at least one cpu core had high usage.

Anyways i would highly recommend to oc the cpu a bit as you target high framerates. The frametime will definitely be much more consistent.
It may be cpu bottlenecking. Try capping the at 60 see if the framerate is consistent. If so you may want to oc your cpu to at least 4.2 or better 4.5 ghz allcore.
My old 3770k did cause some framedrops aswell playing overwatch at 144fps. So i wouldn't be surprised.

thanks i appreciate the reply, i should also mention that before i upgraded to the 1080 i was running a gtx 770 4gb, which had no problem running overwatch at 144fps on medium, rarely ever dropped, it was with the same cpu,
i will give your suggestion a try, i have heard that moving to 1440p may be better as will be less cpu intensive?

so ive been playing a few games the past few days, it seems to do fine when i play on moderate fps and lock the game however when i aim for high fps it lags alot, so you seem correct in what you said, the cpu cant keep up with the gpu fps, im going to overclock the cpu now, thanks for your help!
