After Samsung bought out Sony's portion of their joint display venture, they really can't afford to let Sharp fail. That would be like Intel letting AMD go bankrupt. Its more economical to invest in your failing competitor, than to be subject to scrutiny for being a Monopoly. It's also much easier to price fix the market which both of these manufacturers have been found guilty of. Sure there are a few other manufacturers of displays, but calling them a competitor to Samsung's display division is like calling VIA or IBM an competitor in the CPU market to Intel, sure they make CPU's but they aren't really competition.
