Recently thought I'd invest in my first proper PC and build it myself, finished it a few days ago and everything was running smoothly but it was heating up quite a bit so I re-opened it and made a few adjustment.

I plugged in the power to see if it was fine but left the GPU out, so the power cable for the GPU was out too and was touching another wire.

When I turned it on there was a lot of smoke and the wire it was touching is burnt to a crisp.

Have I potentially ruined all the parts??? What should I do?

Sorry I'm still new to PC's and I'm really confused, it was a £1100 build :/

If it's a front panel wire, that means that it connects to two points. The first is to the case, possibly via a small circuit board on the front panel. If the current is routed through that, it might damage the front panel circuit board.

The second connection is to the motherboard. If the current gets routed through that, it could have damaged the grounding circuit trace on the motherboard. That would be a problem.

You can check to see if damage was done to these by looking around the connector that the cable was attached to on both the motherboard and the front panel circuit board. If either was damaged, you should be able to spot some singing on or around the traces. Hopefully, it didn't go through any nearby ICs, as that would be...

I just had a look and the wire (front panel wire) that was burnt was only burnt up to where it connects to another wire, so maybe it didn't damage the mobo and everything else?? The other end connected to the mobo.

Thanks for the help!

Update: Had a friend look at it yesterday, only the part of the wire was damaged and PC seems to be working great =D
