Hi,
Some games (e.g. Assassin's Creed Unity, Watch Dogs, Abzu) occasionally freeze for short times (1 second or so). The fps rate is fine and comes back to normal after each freeze. The sound keeps on working while in the freeze. Freezes always occur when some quick animation is going to happen or when some aditional info is going to be displayed. For instance, when I attack some enemy in Assassin's Creed Unity for the first time after resuming the game, when I finish a mission in Watch Dogs, or when the shark attacks my robot in Abzu. So, it seems to have something to do with loading from HDD/SSD into RAM/GPU. The weird thing is that, if I repeat the same scene later (maybe during the same game session, or maybe even after rebooting the laptop and launching the game again), then these specific scenes do not freeze. However, if I repeat them one or two days later then they do, particularly if I played other games in between.
That sounds like I have a loading performance issue, and my PC is caching these animations somewhere (hence, if I repeat them shortly later and they are still stored in that cache, then they are loaded more quickly and the game does not freeze). In order to check this hypothesis, I switched off the virtual memory (I set it to 0 Mb). Two surprising things happened. First, if some animation already happened while playing during a recent previous Windows session, then this scene kept on working fine without any freeze. Hence, if they are cached somewhere, then it's not the virtual memory. Where else can this information survive between different Windows sessions? Second, when Windows' virtual memory is set to 0, attempts to startup Windows always fail at the first try (the laptop suddenly turns off right when Windows begins to load), but they always work at the second try. It only happens in startups, not in restarts. This problem does not bother me too much, since setting the virtual memory back to any amount over 0 fixes the problem (I'm commenting it just in case it has to do with my freezing problem).
My freezing issue started four months after buying the laptop, it didn't happen before. In order to check whether it was an HDD problem, I tried reinstalling the games in the SSD. Freezes were still there. Since it is not probable that both my HDD and my SSD simultaneously have loading performance issues, I'm assuming both are fine. I also tried reinstalling Windows 8.1 and moving to Windows 10. Nothing improved.
The GPU driver is updated. While playing, the GPU sometimes reaches 91ºC, though typically it stays around 70s and 80s.
I do not experience any other issues with my laptop. Any ideas?
My specs:
