Hi has anyone done enough googling to know what is the shortest GTX980 in length? I have a small case and would like to get as much clearance as possible.
As far as the GeForce GTX 980 goes, cards based on the reference boards are basically the shortest. They have a length of 10.51" (267mm). Even hybrid cards (air and water cooled) are at least this length.
The best designed cards are usually longer, with better cooling and higher grade circuitry. One of the best cards that you can get at the 10.51" length is the EVGA 04G-P4-2983-KR card:
It comes heavily overclocked and uses binned chips along with higher grade components. There is still a higher than average failure rate on these cards due to the factory overclock, but problems usually show up within a few weeks of use.
You can look up the list of the stock length cards yourself at PC PartPicker here:
That card is nearly 11 inches long, the Nano is 6.
Well, 10.51" versus 5.98" - but yes, the length difference is massive. The price reduction on the Nano makes it a very compelling card.
I simply wanted to give a response that stayed with the choice of the GeForce GTX 980, since the Nano had already been mentioned.
All of the Nano units use the reference design right now, so I would tend to go with ASUS or Sapphire myself: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-video-card-r9nano4gb

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I ended up buying a R9 Fury Nano.
Steven I am exactly on the same position u were, only more terrified as everyone is screaming to not get it due to coil whine. Can you share what vendor u got and how strong is the coil whine? Thank you in advance

I live in singapore so your vendor may be different. Bought the card from cybermind(it's the closest to my house) and it's a sapphire R9 Furo Nano. For the coil whine, I can assure you that the GTX 980 strix will be bad as I have a friend that owns two(in sli) and it sounds like a jet engine when it's working hard(it's watercooled so it can only be the coilwhine sound). So far the fury nano has been quiet(I watercooled it) but very slight coilwhine that is only audible with the case opened and up close. I could be the lucky one though, I am certain that some owners will have worse coilwhine. I'd recommend the fury nano for its less coilwhine, but its air cooler seems to be sub-par so i'd also recommend watercooling it.
