Sometimes when I start up my gaming PC (high powered) when I hit the power button I hear the fans whirring and I hear the hard drive spinning and I hear some quiet whirrs It's the hardware itself making noise.

If it was clicking or rattling or obviously loud I'd be worried but it happens for 2 seconds then stops.

I power it on with the power button and shut it off with power button.

Windows 8.

Solution
Do not shut if off with the power button, go thorugh the Windows shutdown option.

Yes the computer should make sounds form the fans and hard drive spinning. It will ramp up the fans at startup then settle down to normal speeds.
You can set it up to do a normal shut down with a button press .... I assume you aren't doing a hard shutdown and holding the power button and just giving it a quick press.

It's normal to hear the fans/hdd spinning up during startup/under load

If it's an ongoing noise that you start to notice, troubleshoot it by unplugging the power SATA cable from the back of your peripherals one at a time to figure out which device is causing the sound. If it's none of those (HDD, ODD etc..) then do the same with your fans, unplug them one at a time to see which is causing the sound and replace it.

If it's something that does go away after a few seconds however, that's nothing to be alarmed over.

Your fans are likely at fault. I know they seem fine, but they may be having thermal issues. Try running the PC for 15 minutes or so, then REBOOT the PC using the START menu, RESTART sequence.

IF the 'ginding noise' happens again, then your system disk is possibly faling and likely needs to be replaced SOON. A BUSY disk doesn't sound like "GRINDING"

If the 'grinding noise' does not come back, I would venture that one of your fans is failing. It is noisy when COLD, but runs smoothly after warming. Remember, you have most likely 3 fans: CASE, CPU and Video Card GPU fans. Could be any one of those, but check the Video Card fan first since it tends to be the smallest and usually of poorer quality. (Yes, They TOO can be replaced)
