I always set automatic updates to notify before downloading or installing.
That way I know how big the download is and have full control over what automatic updates is doing.

Pretty much the same as others -- I have it set to automatically download them but not install until I tell it to -- That way it will download them in the background and have them ready for me to look at and install when I have the time (Nothing worse than it starting to install an update in the middle of a gaming session - Kind of like the AV scans - I set aside one session per month to install all updates and do a full system scan and create backups of essential files that have been modified since the last backup. ( Also make a restore point just before and just after that is done in case problems show up after the updates )
Only bad part of having it set this way is to shut down you have to first Log off your account and then shut down ( As MS has the shut down option change to Install updates and shut down when an update is downloaded and waiting for install ! )
I also set update to notify only. I then wait a couple of days to make sure there are no cries of anguish from the user community before I apply the updates.
