Question Should I get a 4090 or go for a 4080?

My current PC has an RTX 3080, and I want to build a new PC with an RTX 4090, but 4090 prices have gone up more than 50% and are set to double next year.

The RTX 5000 (blackwell architecture) is set for late 2024.

Should I just settle with an RTX 4080 if I am gaming at 1920x1080?

Would I not notice any noticeable performance increase going from my 3080 to a 4080, compared to going from a 3080 to 1 4090?

4080 prices are stable and are at MSRP.

I heard that the 4080 has almost double the performance of the 3080.

I upgraded before the increase in the prices from an RTX 3080 to an RTX 4090. I got it for non-gaming tasks and even the RTX 4090 was not enough. For gaming with a 1440p monitor, this GPU still doesn't make sense in comparison with the RTX 3080 for me. For 1080p even an RTX 4080 should be an overkill and the RTX 3080 is a really good 1080p GPU. If what you want is to run even single-player AAA-titles at 1080p 240+Hz monitor then go for that kind of GPU. Otherwise, at least wait until the next generation with the GPU that you have that is already capable of running everything at 1080p. If you choose such cards for 1080p keep in mind that you also need to get the best single-core performance CPU out there to get as much performance as possible from the GPU.

The 3080 should run everything just fine at 1080p why even upgrade.

FYI the 4080 has 16GB VRAM, about the only thing it has going for it over the 4070Ti. Doesn't justify the price though, but it does compete fairly well with the 7900XT and XTX in terms of performance excepting ray tracing.

3080/308012GB/3080Ti, can pretty much handle any game out at 1080p. 1440p and they can start to dip into the high 60 FPS which if you are running a 144hz+ monitor can be a little disappointing. Not worth $1000+ to upgrade it.

Personally going to wait for Battlemage and see if it is worth having. If not, probably move to AMD.

More information is needed. What game(s) do you play? Why are you seeking greater performance? What is your current FPS and which frame rate do you wish to achieve? What are the rest of your system specs, including the mfg and model of your power supply.

I play Skyrim with so many graphics mods installed, that even at 1080p, my framerate drops to 25-50 in most situations.

These are the kinds of Skyrim graphics I was talking about.

OK, first of all: according to Nvidia's roadmap, the RTX 50 series will be released in 2025:

Second: if you opt for an upgrade, i really think you should steer clear from every other GPU in the RTX 40 series, except for the 4090.

That's pretty much the only card worth buying and you'll be set up for years to come.

Performance wise, 4090 is a huge leap, giving as much as 80% up, compared to its previous generation counterpart (3090).

Just take a look at the benchmarks posted by a fellow forum member, who happened to own both cards, and you'll see what i'm talking about:

I know it seems like a lot of money, but, if you can already afford a 4080, try and be a little more patient, until you raise some more cash, for the 4090.

You might have to wait for two more months or so, but i can guarantee that the 4090 will make it worth for both your time and money.

Trust me: i tried doing my job with a lesser card (4070 Ti, to be exact), but it was just a waste of money.

But, if you decide to go for 4090, get ready for the upgrade of your life.

The average price of a 4090 is between $2,000 and $2,500

There isn't any way of knowing when the prices will return to MSRP

Don't waste your time, waiting for prices to return to MSRP.

If i were you, i'd spend a few more dollars and just get a 4090. After all, you 're a 1080p gamer, so you'll be good to go for the next 6-7 years.

If you can't afford to drop $800 more dollars for a beast of a card that destroys anything in its path today AND will set you up for quite a few years down the road, my advice is save your money...

Long term baby. Long term. If you are gonna spend $1200 on 4080... might as well go the whole way with the 4090. That's what I would do in your shoes.

Are you saying that the RTX 4090 is almost twice as fast as the RTX 4080?

At 1080p you won't be seeing huge gains by upgrading, but you'll start seeing diminishing returns if you go to the 4090.

By the time 4090 prices return to normal, the RTX 5000 (Blackwell architecture) series will be out.

Like I said, the RTX 50 series won't be out till 2025, and, if current prices are any indication of things to come, it will be even more expensive.

But, in the meantime, if you ‘ve already bought 4090, you won’t have a need for an RTX 50 card.

4090, is plenty good for 4K 60 (let alone 1080p), and, if you decide to go for it, I can definitely see you skipping the 5000 series.

For 1080p, they are going to have a hard time convincing you you need anything beyond the 4090. There comes a time when hardware reaches the peak... and IMO we are pretty close, if not there already, with the 4090.

How is Nvidia going to sell you (say) on the 5090? Gaming in Ultra settings? You will already be there, with plenty of room to spare, with the 4090.

I just don't see how you 're gonna convince yourself to spend on an even more expensive card, in order to achieve performance you’ll already be getting with the 4090.

I’m saying that the 24 GBs of 4090, will be far more useful in the long run, and they ‘re gonna make your GPU last for years, especially at 1080p gaming.

Can’t say the same about 4080: we ‘ve reached a point where 16GBs of VRAM is a bare minimum for some AAA titles.

I don't just play games at 1080p, I also do a lot of advanced 3D modeling and rendering in Blender.

Cycles render uses ray-tracing, and the more GPU horsepower, the faster it renders.

If you can wait, I'd hold out for next year's 5000 series. Otherwise, buy the 4090 now and hang on to it for a while. The 4090 has such a massive performance improvement over almost every other GPU this generation, it's a great buy. Much better than the 3090 was.

Or I could get the 4080 now and when the 5000 series comes out, I could do a trade-in and probably get about $800 off the price.

Do I need to get a new CPU and memory for each new generation of GPU? Or should the 5000 work with a Ryzen 7950X3D and 32GB of DDR5 gaming memory?
