Should I get a GeForce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming or Asus Strix?

Hello,

I've been looking at these two cards a lot recently and I would really like to know your guy's opinions on these. I'm no expert when it comes to graphics cards.

If you guys could please answer me these questions, I would be super grateful:
-Which is coolest under load?
-Which will be easiest to overclock. I know that G1 has higher boost clock, but i am still unsure.

Also I saw that there are two different identical models of the Asus Strix 1070, but one has higher boost and base clock speeds. Are the cards different and will the cheaper, lower clock model OC just as easily?

I am currently running a GTX 970 G1 Gaming.

Thank you so much to anyone who can help me out here. I really appreciate it!

Thanks again,
Lukas

Solution
Of the two I'd go the Strix, they run nice and cool, I've a pair of the 980s and a 980Ti in a couple of my rigs, looking to the 1080 Strix unless they come out with a Matrix model soon. As far as OCing, it will all depend on the individual card you get, those with a higher pre-OC may still have OC headroom or might be basically already topped out. GPUs are like CPUs some chips will OC great and others might stink 😉

I would go with the g1 gaming over the asus as the asus cards normaly run a little hotter and i like gigabyte overall better as i have had both cards of the 7970 series. but it is up too you most what you like as they peform the same

Ok, thanks for the tip. I will still dont know which one I will choose yet but that helped.

I would go for the Asus because it has higher base clock speed and can be over locked easier over the g1gaming .it will run hotter 67degrees max load at 2000mhz with stock cooler and g1gaming should be around 65 degrees at max load .but 2 degrees difference wont have any affect in performance.and Asus has put 2x 4pin connectors for fans ,so that's also a bonus. And Asus has new software that when you are gaming you get higher clock speed. For example you put 1900 mhz and when you open a game (assasins creed) the clocks speeds goes up to 2100mhz while you play.so that's why I would pick the Asus over the gigabyte.

The Strix doesn't have a 'stock' cooler, as far as temps it will depend on the individual rig........

Between them the coolest should be the gigabyte about 2 degrees or less in max load. And also in idle because Asus has 0rpm fans mode and the gigabyte hasn't .asus should be easier to overclock and also Asus has put new software and while you play games the clocks speed get an increase about 100 MHz or more that's why the Asus runs 2 degrees hotter than the gigabyte. And no there is no physical difference between the Asus oc and regular both should overclock the same and as easy . The only difference is that the oc has higher clock speed out of the box ,but they are the same.so go for the Asus ! And go for the cheaper of them the oc or regular .

There are two Asus Strix 1080 cards, the 8G which has a base clock of 1607 and the O8G (overclocked) with a base clock of 1784. While physically the same, the GPU chips have been binned to ensure those that go into the OC model are of a higher standard. GPU chips are the same as CPUs - they are all individual and as far as how they OC independent as a single chip. Many will OC very well and others not so much (you can check the ASIC quality of the individual chip in your GPU with GPU-Z which could range from 60ish to 90+ ish. So what temps any individual card will run at depends on the individual card, there is no way one can make a definitive statement about what temps will be other than on a single individual card, my two 980 Strix cards at stock under identical load vary by up to 4+ degrees.

Strix Gaming 8G.....$429.....1531/1721 clock speeds.....8-pin power.....6+1 phases.....3 fans.....298mm x 134mm x 2 slots
ROG Strix Gaming OC.....$449.....1632/1835 & 1657/1860 clock speeds.....8-pin power.....6+1 phases.....3 fans.....298mm x 134mm x 2

G1 Gaming.....$429.....1594/1784 & 1620/1822 clock speeds.....8-pin power.....6+2 phases.....3 fans.....280mm x 114mm x 2 slots

My G1, runs at 1962 out of the box while gaming. My cards cooling remains passive under 60 degrees C, although I have elected to change this with a custom fan curve.

Man we said the same thing .and when I say the difference is about 2 degrees I don't mean that while you play you will get a steady temp at 67 with Asus 65 with gigabyte .i mean that from the whole game the average on Asus is for example 69 c and on gigabyte should be a little lower like 67c. Ofcourse the temps are not stable my CPU idle is 25 and sometimes goes to 30c so the average is 27c.

Depending on the rig and the individual card it could the other way, or could be much cooler or hotter. Simply pointing out you can't generalise a given card will run at X-temp or compare to a different brand/model as they will run X-degrees higher or lower

Ofcource each chip has his own temps.here we speak generally about how much is the average difference and how its component looks like and run like. Any one can get a broken one and other temps than others or run a little hotter or cooler but it should be around a specific temp. I can't explain so much it's thing I say because I would need a book to write it.

Each individual card is an individual card and as mentioned the rig it's in will also play, you can just say Card A will run 2 degrees cooler than Card B. There are too many variables that play in. It's similar to saying all 4770Ks will run 4.7 safely, which of course they won't

That's for sure man each chip wont run the same as other but if someone ask which card is the coolest . What are you gonna tell him? Generally the difference between these card is 2 degrees or I don't know each chip has his own temps.which of these 2 would you tell him?

I already mentioned I'd go with the Strix, and have been trying to explain how things are in the real world. I have a systems business and work with a variety of components daily - if you wish to insist that there is a 2 degree difference (prob based on an article/review you've read), then so be it.

You still didn't answer my question.if some asked you which card runs cooler. What would you tell him. That's what this guys asked and I tried to tell him what results to expect.please answer my question!!!

I am done with all this .i highly recommend you to but the Asus strix.i am out of here.!

I don't know if you made up your mind just yet but I went for the Strix OC because of different things.

First the design: IMO only the Zotac Amp! (regular, not extreme) looks better (at least the part where the fans are), the backplate of the strix is the best looking one I've ever seen on any graphics card to date.

RGB lighting even on the logo that's on the backplate: g1's rbg is only on the side logo and fan stop text plus it has red lights that you can't change, I don't liked red+green color combo for my case (razer nzxt s340). RGB on the strix can be combined in more rigs.

Runs very cool, my s340 only has the 2 included 120mm fans and even then the max temp I've seen so far is 68°c (but most of the time it ran at 59° c). On the other hand Evra from Hardwarecanuncks said the g1 fans were not very efficient in the review of the 1080 g1 which uses the same cooling solution as the 1070 g1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilArkYmDYEI

Finally, I found the Asus cheaper in my country so that was a big plus. Other than that I think I might have gone for the zotac amp extreme, 5 years warranty is very attractive.

Asus is running a promotion when you purchase MOBO or GPU, just register and you'll have 1 more warranty year, so 4 years warranty instead of 3.

Really?, just registered my 1070 and it says 3 years, no promo mentioned at all, could you give me a link?, otherwise I can't believe you.
