Should I get i5 6500 or i5 7400?

The passmark score of 7400 is better than that of 6500. However, I want to know if lower base clock of 7400 will affect the performance of my system in real world.
Also, how long should I wait to get a MSI H110M Pro VD with pre-updated BIOS for Kabylake CPUs. Or am I better off getting a MSI B250M Mortar.

AM4 motherboards were shown off at CES. They are being made, they are being shown off, they are being put into systems built for CES showpieces. Don't spread false information please.

The motherboards will be out along with the chips--they might not be the exact same date, but there's no reason for AMD to launch Ryzen if they don't have any motherboards from vendors.

Edit: But to be on topic; if you're buying now, get the 6500 + H110. They will perform much the same, but the 6500 runs natively on the h110 chipset. Otherwise, I'd suggest waiting the couple weeks to compare price/performance with Ryzen.
7400 Freuqency is 3.0 it has a BCLK of 100 and a multiplier of 30.
6500 Frequency is 3.2 it has a BCLK of 100 and a multiplier of 32.
The base clocks are the same.
The IPC are the same.
The 6500 is actually like 1% faster, where did you see that the 7400 is scoring better? Were the BCLKs modified? It shouldn't be testing faster unless it had its BCLK increased using a special UEFI.

You should just get the skylake in my opinion. I have a 6400 sitting at 4ghz with a modified BCLK.

Kabylake isn't much better than skylake... if at all.

It only has 28 samples and is very close.
I would stipulate that with more results the numbers will get closer.
You can see already that single core performance is higher with the 6500.

28 samples is just not enough, the 6500 has TWO THOUSAND samples, to put it into perspective.

How long should you wait? It's available now. What am I missing? I'd go for the H110.

The i5 6500. The difference is not substantial enough to make me choose the 7400.

Ryzen CPU's are set to be released within the next three weeks. Can you wait until some benchmarks are released?

NRJ, if he buys a 7400 and puts it into an H110 he is gonna have a bad time - the UEFI updates aren't at the shelves yet as far as what i've heard. It will fail to boot.

Ryzen CPUs are set to be released in three weeks, which is intersting. Where can i get an AM4 motherboard?.. that is a problem isn't it 😛

Your statement? sarcasm? about Ryzen escapes me. Am I wrong?

Yeah you are. Releasing a CPU does not mean available for puchase in any way shape or form.

Can you go out and buy an AM4 motherboard? no - they aren't even being made yet. If Ryzen is released in three weeks, it will be nothing more than a statement. we MIGHT see it in some proprietary uses/devices relatively soon. But there is no sign of motherboards for Ryzen on the horizon. I mean do you think they are gonna use the 990FX chipset? cmon. Ryzen is a bit of a wait still.

I prefer education or constructive criticism to sarcasm or insults. However I do appreciate the bit of info you have offered.

After some Googling I have seen

http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/am4-motherboards-surface-in-online-stores-for-pre-order-with-price-and-eta.html

However that listing has been removed. The Feb. 24th date is at more than just one site. I wonder if there are any definitive dates.

For now I stand behind my statement. I will listen to AMD's CEO

AMD CEO Lisa Su said: "I think we have Ryzen launching in early March, and then we will have Vega, our enthusiast GPU, launching in the second quarter.

If you have any proof of your words I welcome it. If not I think you are in fact wrong, from the sites I have mentioned and others which point to Feb. and March. for Ryzen and AM4. Thanks again. Always a silver lining.

LOL Love that edit.

I spread AMD's CEO's information. Tell her, not me.

BIOS update to supports Kaby Lake for the H110 mobo the OP listed has been out for nearly 4 months.
https://ca.msi.com/Motherboard/support/H110M-PRO-VD.html#down-bios
BIOS 2.A, released Oct 19.

But yes, a 6500 is the better CPU.

If this is true, OP, I'd contact MSI and ask if it ships with that BIOS update on it. Otherwise, it won't recognize the CPU and you won't even be able to get into the BIOS to flash it. And if it does--I'd go for a 7500 in lieu of the 7400 as the 7500 and 6500 are price nearly the exact same, and while you won't see much performance gain, there is added performance there for no added money. Win win situation.
