hello , so i know people like to overclock and benchmark for fun , but i want to overclock for gaming performance , as i have a 980ti and run most games at 4k on about 50-55 fps , and overclocking will hopefully get that up to 60 , is it worth it ? and is it safe?

i am a little hesitant because i have broken a graphics card before overclocking

if so , what should be the max core clock and mem speed bearing in mind its only a gaming overclock ( i know every card is different but as a general rule of thumb?)

Solution
No it does not. They come from the manufacturer set to run at 82/83c. Pascal, maxwell and Kepler. Don't know where you got your info. That's why the founders edition runs steadily and safely at 80-83c. The stock temperature targets for the cards is 82c and they will run consistently at that temperature. That's how gpu boost works by keeping the cards at the temperature target by downclocking itself if needed and upclocking itself if temps are below the temp target. This is why 3rd party software like msi afterburner gives you the option to adjust temp target.
It all depends on your temperatures.

Download MSI Afterburner and a stress tester like Heaven Benchmark. Do not do any overclocking yet. Run Heaven and wait till the entire test is complete, monitor temperatures constantly, if it goes above 80 degrees Celsius close the benchmark, and do not overclock because your cooling is inadequate.

If temperatures are very cool, around 70 or lower, then you're all good. Run MSI Afterburner and raising the core clock by 50mhz. Raise memory by about that much as well. Run the stress test again and monitor temperatures.

Repeat the process until temperatures get very high, 80 ish degrees Celsius.

This is not true. 80c on a graphics card is completely fine. This only means you need to create a custom fan profile and tell the fans to spin up to a higher speed at a lower temperature. As stated download and use MSI afterburner. In its settings look for the monitoring tab and select gpu temperature and select it to show OSD "on screen display". You can start with a 100mhz on the core which should be just fine and maybe a 100hz on the memory. Run a game or Benchmark like heaven(i prefer game testing myself) and if it holds up just fine and doesn't get too hot then you are good to try a slightly higher overclock. The msi software gives you a temperature target slider that you can adjust lower or higher. I try to leave mine around 82c because once the video card reaches that temperature the software will downclock the card to keep itself within the 82c or lower. But if you create a custom fan profile like most people do and have your fans spinning at 100% at say 80c then your card really should never go over 80c of course you can set it to a lower temp but a custom fan profile is a must when overclocking a video card.

Having a card at 80 degrees plus won't damage it yes, but it does shorten it's life.

Alright then. Why am I able to select your answer as best solution, or even unselect it?

Chill, I believe you.
