Should I plug my CPU fan into my fan controller?

Hi all,
I have an NZXT Grid V3+ currently controlling my fans as my motherboard refuses to do it. This is also the case for my CPU fan, which is currently still plugged into the motherboard. I can hear the CPU fan go faster and slower when it is under load, but it is VERY loud and I cannot set custom fan curves as my motherboard is playing up. The motherboard is MSI 970 Gaming (I know its old now) and this wasn't happening on my old motherboard, but that broke and so MSI sent me a replacement. This motherboard then decided not to control fans. Thanks in advance.

It depends on how the motherboard BIOS works: some BIOS will 'fail safe' and refuse to POST or start up if it does not detect a operable fan on the CPU fan header. It's...

It depends on how the motherboard BIOS works: some BIOS will 'fail safe' and refuse to POST or start up if it does not detect a operable fan on the CPU fan header. It's meant to prevent burning up a processor before the BIOS even loads, which used to happen quite often.

The stock fans that come with AM3 CPU's are quite noisy and demand a lot of speed to keep cool. The fans in the Wraith coolers on FX processors I know had their own temperature sensors and will speed up up to an ear splitting 6000RPM should the CPU heat up, even if the Motherboard profile isn't commanding it to. If it's dust filled, it will do that frequently so maybe even just cleaning the dust could help out a lot. But you may be surprised how so much more effective the fan profiles work with a quieter cooler and fan if this is the case.

Thanks, I'll clean the dust out now and see if that makes a difference. I'll then have a think about getting a different cooler!
