That alone might make it worth something.

No, its really not. Overkill is when you get like 120 fps at completely maxed out settings. A 7970 will allow you max out settings on the newest games at 1080p and keep a solid 60 fps.

If your only expecting to play games on medium or high settings and/or your only expecting to get 30 fps, then yeah a 7970 would be overkill.

+1^ I would not mind a 7970/50 for my 1680x1050 monitor 60fps on every game FTW ! 6950 and 570 have a time with the high end titles at leased from what I have witnessed even on 1050P reso.

hea...y redteam_ftw, :hello: and welcome to tomshardware.
@OP: the 580 might not be worth the price since this year both amd and nvidia are releasing new architecture pcie 3 cards.
when are you buying the pc?
ivy bridge will bring native pcie 3.0 support in a few months. according to the speculations, z77 motherboard (top of the line intel pch) will support pcie 3.0 x8+x8 cfx/sli. that will sit perfectly with the new crop of pcie 3 cards. although, so far gaming hasn't shown any improvement over pcie 2.0. hopefull it'll change in the future.

Hi http://img.tomshardware.com/forum/uk/icones/smilies/hello.gif and thanx I to the OP I must agree with ( de5_roy ) about PCI-E 3.0 don't let that sway your opinion because PCI-E 2.0 x16 is still far from bottlenecking even the highest end/Performance Radeon HD 6990 Dual GPU card and aside from bandwidth increases that will not be needed or used for the next gen of cards on PCI-E 3 it will just drive up cost.

That's correct.

As for this upcoming generation (well next two generations) pcie 2 is still more than adequate for video cards. Now 4+ years from now with future architectures, pcie 3 will make more of a difference. I believe pcie 3.0 is more for future pcie 3 ssd cards.

you could do..
1. buy that gtx580, if you got money, just will do every game in 1080p.
2. wait for 2 months more.. and buy that 7970.. again if you got the money
3. if you regret it.. sell the 580 after 7970 available, and just buy 7970.
4. no more confusion.

What? Everything u just said was a big ball of confusion.

1. If u buy hardware and sell it used u are going to loose money. Waste.

2. Why buy the 7970 in 2 months? It releaes in a couple days. It's not like the price is going to drop by then......

I believe those NZXT 200mm case fans are NOT actually 200mm, they are 192mm I think. I don't think that would work with the case you selected, in fact clicking on the fan the first review stated that it does not work with that case.

I personally wouldn't recommend getting a GTX580 if value is a consideration, since that card has probably the lowest price/performance, although the performance is excellent. I would probably recommend a GTX 560TI 448 as the most expensive card worth your while. Probably a 560TI, 6950, or 6870 would do the job just fine as well. A $150 6870 is ~70% the speed of a 580, will save you $350 and you can sit on your unemployed bum and play every game on high settings just fine.
